A dwell cam mechanism (110, 120, 132) on the turntable causes the molds to accelerate ahead of the turntable, stop under the flow head to receive a parison (31), then accelerate to catch up with the turntable. Abstract: An arrangement for opening and closing mold halves of a blow mold is disclosed. The blow mold generally forms part of a stretching and blowing machine for blow-molding hollow bodies from thermoplastic plastics materials. The mold halves are coupled to driven rocker arms, which are driven by driving rocker arms of a four-link gear, the pivot of the four-link gear being disposed immediately at the end of the common pivotal axis of the mold halves. The driving rocker arm of the four-link gear is formed by cylinders, which are provided with cam tracks on their external curved surfaces in which rollers mounted on a sliding cam controller travel.

  • Patent number: 4802832
Abstract: An in-mold labeling device for blow molding machines which includes a carriage assembly which moves a labeling head between a position in registry with a label storage magazine to a displaced position in registry with a cavities of molds. The labeling head includes a pick-up arm which is pivotable and supports a self aligning pick-up pad which carries one or more vacuum cups. In operation, the carriage assembly moves to a first position where the pick-up arm is pivoted to place the vacuum cups in contact with a label carried by the storage magazine. The pick-up arm is then pivoted back to pull off a label, and a slide is moved to position the labeling head into registering with an open mold. The pick-up arm is again pivoted to deposit the label in position onto the inside surface of the mold cavity and is maintained in that position through vacuum ports within the mold.

  • Patent number: 4752206
Abstract: An improved take-out assembly for removing workpieces from a blow molding machine particularly adapted for blow molding machines having a continuously rotating turn table which rotates about a horizontal axis. The take-out assembly includes a turntable with a plurality of extending pick-up units having suction cup type engaging pads at their ends. Rotation of the take-out assembly turntable is coordinated with the blow molder turntable such that a suction cup pick-up unit is positioned to engage a workpiece at the desired work station. The pick-up units are radially movable to extend and retract to provide clearance during rotation and to properly engage the workpiece at the discharge station. A rotary timing valve is used to conduct a vacuum source to the individual pick-up heads at the desired point in the operating cycle of the take-out assembly.

  • Patent number: 4738612
Abstract: A blow-molding apparatus for molding hollow articles is disclosed, which comprises a base member, and a platform mounted thereon. An extruder is provided which has a nozzle located above the platform. Bearings are attached to the upper surface of the platform, and support a shaft. A mold opening/closing device is pivotable mounted on the shaft, and comprises a main body, a pair of mold halves supported by the main body, and a mold-moving unit for moving the molds toward and away from each other. The apparatus further comprises a device for rotating the mold opening/closing device around the shaft, thereby to incline the device at an angle, within a predetermined range, to the horizontal plane. Thus, both mold halves can be inclined, thereby forming an inclined cavity when they are clamped together. A parison can be supplied smoothly from the nozzle into the inclined cavity, under its own weight.

  • Patent number: 4650628
Abstract: Apparatus and method are provided for straightening a parison tube (58b) in an apparatus of the type in which thermoplastic tubing (48) is extruded into open halves (24 and 26) of a blow mold (22) and a parison tube (58b) is severed from the thermoplastic tube (48) concurrently with the blow mold being rotated around an axis (28). The present invention orients the curvature of the parison (58b) in a predetermined plane (52) by accelerating the parison tube (58b) transversely to the axis (90) of the parison tube (58b); and then the parison tube (58b) is straightened by applying jets of air (76) against the neck and moil portion (68) of the parison tube (58b), thereby straightening the parison tube (58b), and thereby preventing the neck and moil portion (68) of the parison tube (58b) from being pinched between the mold halves (24 and 26) in the area of the neck and moil cavity (38).

The machine is of the rotary type and has a plurality of stations each carrying a mold unit of which one half is fixed and the other is mounted for radial movement between open and closed positions. The main shaft of the machine is of a large diameter and is tubular so that the necessary manifolding for gas and coolant supplies may be readily incorporated in the main shaft in an entirely different manner from that heretofore utilized. Also, among other features of the machine, is the provision of hollow spokes which serve not only to support outer mold halves for radial movement, but also serve as manifold accumulators for the necssary operating gases.

  • Patent number: 4626190
Abstract: Blow molding apparatus wherein halves of a split mold are carried by mold carriers. The mold carriers normally include one fixed mold carrier and one movable mold carrier which is positioned by way of a cam follower and associated cams. When the mold closes, the mold carriers come into closed relation with respect to one another. The mold carriers are provided with locking flanges which are engaged by C-shaped retaining members so as to prevent the material separation of the mold carriers. Then a pressure pack within the mold carriers is expanded so as to clamp the mold halves together. A simplified linkage is provided for, in conjunction with a cam follower and cams, to move the retaining members between retaining positions and release positions. The cams are mounted for adjustment normal to the direction of movement of the mold carriers and may be adjusted in that normal position to compensate for adjusted positions of the mold carriers in accordance with different size molds.

Abstract: Disclosed is an improved hand-over-hand blow molding machine and the method for forming a chain of hollow, shaped article bodies of biaxially oriented, normally highly crystalline thermoplastic material from a tube of said material in substantially unoriented condition, but at an orientation temperature. The machine and method are characterized by an additional blow mold in tandem with one of the blow molds of the prior art two mold machine and method. The machine is operated so that each longitudinally stretched portion of the tube on which the mold pieces of each blow mold closes has substantially the same extent of longitudinal stretch or elongation. This is done by arresting the travel of the tube into the machine according to the distance of travel of the blow mold pulling it into the machine.
