Including Means To Close Or Lock Blow Mold Patents (Class 425/541)
  • Patent number: 6824377
Abstract: The upper and lower halves of a blow mold define a blow mold cavity when the halves are closed together. A bottom plug which serves to form a dome in the bottom of the blown bottle is shifted into and out of a cooperating relationship with the two mold halves by cam mechanism that operates in response to raising and lowering of the upper die set upon which the upper mold half is mounted. The actuating mechanism comprises a pair of mutually opposed cam rods having a follower trapped therebetween that is in turn coupled with the bottom plug so that as the cam rods are shifted with the upper die set, the follower reacts to cam surfaces on the rods to impart a corresponding extension and retraction motion to the bottom plug. To handle multiple, side-by-side blow mold cavities, the bottom plugs for such cavities are ganged together on a common support bar that is in turn provided with operating shanks, each provided with a cam follower operated by a cam assembly.

Abstract: Each of the clamping plates of the closing unit of the blow molding machine has secured thereto a pivotable locking means which in the calibration position in the swung-up state comes into engagement with a plate which is part of the calibration device. A short friction-type connection which is symmetrical relative to the mold parting plane is thereby established between the blow mold and the calibration cylinder during calibration so that the calibration forces are transmitted in an exact manner. The locking means swing downwards when the blow mold is opened and/or the closing unit returns to the head station. Collisions with other machine parts are thereby ruled out.

Abstract: An improved blow mold shell, and a blow mold shell assembly, for use in blow molding containers is disclosed. The blow mold shell comprises an elongate unitary blow mold shell body defining a partial molding cavity, the partial molding cavity having a container neck forming portion and a container body forming portion. A first continuous cooling circuit is defined within the shell with respect to the neck forming portion of the molding cavity. A second separate, and independent, continuous cooling circuit is defined within the shell with respect to the body forming portion of the molding cavity. So constructed, the neck and body portions of a blow mold container may be separately cooled, and/or heat-treated, as desired, during the molding process to allow the sidewall portion of the container to be molded in as thin a sidewall section as possible in contrast to the neck portion of the container.

Abstract: In a single-row and expandable into a multi-row stretch blow molding method and apparatus, a robot having a universal gripper assembly is used to pick up molded preforms during the clamp opening stroke of a preform-molding unit and then transfer the preforms at variable time intervals to a conditioning, stretch blow molding and discharge unit, releases finished hollow articles and returns to a waiting position at the preform-molding unit independent of the preform-molding cycle. Simultaneously, component transfer devices pick up external components, i.e. labels, valves or handles during the stretch blow molding phase and release the components into the blow-mold cavities while the universal gripper assembly is in the waiting position. The universal gripper assembly can alternatively also be pivoted to pick up preforms from a lateral reheat unit to supplement the molded preform supply.
