Flash Removal Patents (Class 425/806)
  • Patent number: 5505602
Abstract: A mold for joining a molded portion onto an end of an extruded weather strip without having any looseness in the joint formed therebetween, and which facilitates removal of a fin formed in the molded portion. The mold includes mold members defining a cavity at an end of which an end of the extruded weather strip is placed, and to which a molding material is injected. The mold members further define a tunnellike additional cavity in a parting plane therebetween. The tunnellike additional cavity extends along a peripheral edge of the cavity so that an end thereof is located at the position beyond the end of the extruded weather strip. A passage is also defined in the parting plane so as to interconnect the cavity and the tunnellike additional cavity for introducing a molding material into the tunnellike additional cavity. The passage extends to a position close to but not beyond the end of the extruded weather strip.

  • Patent number: 5494631
Abstract: A pair of semispherical molds, each having dimple-forming projections on a connecting portion is used to shape a resinous material into a golf ball having dimples on a seam corresponding to the connecting portion. A ball fixing means is utilized to hold the golf ball thereto with the seam uncovered. A cutting member disposed at an end of a rotary shaft, and having a radius of curvature smaller than a sectional radius of curvature of the dimple is utilized to remove a burr from the seam of the golf ball. The rotary shaft rotates on its axis and moves forward when the cutting member is brought into contact with the dimple on the seam and backward when the cutting member is brought into contact with a convex land portion. The cutting member is then pressed against the seam successively in alternate contact with the dimples and the land portions.

  • Patent number: 5480607
Abstract: The present invention teaches an improved method and apparatus for molding plastic products which results in the removal of plastic residue such as flash from the products during the molding process itself. The invention teaches the use of flash retainers, situated within the mold, and into which a portion of the plastic flash becomes trapped during the molding process. After the mold is opened, the product is removed, leaving the flash still secured to the mold. The flash is then removed from the mold by the use of ejector rods which are inserted to within the flash retainers, forcing the flash from the retainer and thereby releasing the flash from the mold. In one embodiment, the flash is pinched between two members which are moved simultaneously away from the molded product to tear the flash completely away from the outer periphery of the molded product.

  • Patent number: 4549066
Abstract: This relates to the cutting or trimming of a blow molded polyester resin article utilizing a CO.sub.2 laser. The article is axially positioned and rotated while the laser beam is focused and concentrated on a preselected portion of the article. The laser beam beneficially vaporizes the polyester resin in the cutting thereof as opposed to forming a dust. Further, the action of the laser is one wherein a certain melting occurs so that the resultant cut edge of the retained part of the article is rounded and sealed.

  • Patent number: 4538489
Abstract: The top seal parts of bottle-like containers made by blow-molding a flexible synthetic resin are cut off by nonrotatably supporting each container, pressing from one side a cutting edge of a cutter against a specific cutting line on the top part of the container, and rotating the cutter around the top part thereby to cut off the top seal part. This process can be carried out by an apparatus comprising a plurality of combinations of mechanisms, each combination comprising a fixing device for nonrotatably and fixedly supporting a container, a cutting head which can be fitted onto the top seal part of this container and can be driven in ascending, descending, and rotating movement, and cutting head drive.

  • Patent number: 4539463
Abstract: A plastic jar is formed by blow molding a combination adapter and jar and thereafter the jar is cut from the adapter utilizing a laser beam. The jar may be blow molded from a preform which is of an injection molded laminated construction so that the wall of the jar is formed of plural layers. The head generated by the laser beam will melt and bond together these layers as opposed to permitting delamination as would occur should the jar be cut from the adapter by a knife or the like. The cut surface of the jar forms the mouth defining surface of the jar and it is preferred that the cut be inclined at a slight angle to a plane normal to the axis of the jar. Damage to the diametrically opposite surface of the jar by portions of the laser beam being utilized for cut off passing through the jar is prevented by a pressurized gas supply tube which is in the path of the laser beam and serves as an absorber for stray rays. This abstract is not to be construed as limiting the claims of the application.

  • Patent number: 4519767
Abstract: A transfer apparatus is provided for transferring a molded record from the record pressing station to the record trimming station of an automated record press. The transfer apparatus is comprised of a clamp which is circular in its closed position with an interior diameter large enough to hold a record by the flash formed about the outside diameter of the record. The clamp is pivotally mounted so as to oscillate between the record pressing station and the record trimming station. In use, the clamp is positioned in the closed position between the upper and lower molding platens so as to form a molding surface against which the flash is formed in a uniform configuration during molding. After the record is molded, the clamp in the closed position is oscillated to a position in alignment with the record trimming station. The clamp is then opened which releases the record for trimming. The clamp then returns to the record pressing station for the next molding cycle.

  • Patent number: 4518551
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for trimming flash from the outer edge of thermoplastic molded records and then finishing the outer edge. A molded record having flash on its outer edge is supported on a turntable and then rotated about its center. The flash and the outer edge of the record immediately adjacent the flash are selectively heated, preferably by using a focused infrared lamp, to a temperature above the glass transition temperature. A cutter is then advanced tangentially through the flash to remove the heat-softened flash from the record. The trimmed outer edge is then finished by bringing a shaped surface into contact with the softened edge and holding it there while rotating the record until the outer edge has the desired finished configuration. The heating is discontinued and the trimmed and finished outer edge is allowed to solidify.

  • Patent number: 4485061
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a round end on a small plastic filament which includes a die having a channel extending into one side with a hemispherical interior end and a bore extending into the other side and coaxially aligned with the channel and having a conic interior end. The tip of the conic section communicates with the hemispherical section. A relief recess is spaced from the periphery of the hemispherical section by a land portion. The peripheral edge of the land portion, which also forms the edge of the channel, may be formed into a knife edge. In the die the filament is cold-formed to provide a hemispherical section spaced apart from the distal end of the filament. Material displaced during the cold-forming process is deposited in a relief section extending peripherally about the channel.

  • Patent number: 4421472
Abstract: A blow molding machine is disclosed for hollow plastic articles. The machine includes a clamp mechanism for a pair of mold sections. It comprises a body disposed below an extruder at an extruding station and a blow pin at a blow station and carrying opposed platens for supporting the mold sections. Each of a pair of levers is pivotally coupled with a respective platen and with the body and the levers are connected together by a pull bar. An actuating means displaces one of the platens relative to the body and equal and opposite motion is transmitted through the levers and the pull bar to the other platen for opening and closing the clamp. A lifting mechanism supports the clamp for movement between the extruding station and the blow station. The lifting mechanism is adapted for vertical motion by a hydraulic motor acting on a lifting frame. The frame is mounted by pivot links on the machine base and pairs of links are connected by a shaft with a crank arm, the crank arms being connected together by a tie rod.
