Publication number: 20140048972Abstract: Mineral samples for use in analytical instruments are created by a system that greatly reduces the sample preparation time and facilitates automation. For example, in some implementations, rather than grinding to expose the interior of mineral particles in sample plug containing mineral particles in an epoxy compound, the sample plug is sliced with a saw, which more rapidly provides in many applications a sufficiently smooth surface on the exposed particle surfaces for observation. Rather than slowly mixing a slow curing epoxy to avoid introducing bubbles into the sample plug, some implementations use a fast settle fixative and a mechanical mixture that avoid bubbles.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 23, 2012Publication date: February 20, 2014Applicant: FEI COMPANYInventor: Paul Gottlieb

Patent number: 4488860Abstract: Method and apparatus for forming multi-layer expanded film. A base film extruded by a die (6) is coated, immediately downstream of the die mouth (5), by a further layer of fluid propelled from a manifold (16) through a metering orifice (19). Patent number: 4448739Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a device for manufacturing multi-ply sheets of extrudable plastics material supplied by way of at least two webs which are produced by extruders having flat sheet dies and which are bonded to a structured insert web by means of rolls. Moreover, the invention relates to multi-ply sheets thus produced, especially for use with a shower enclosure. In manufacturing such multi-ply sheets it is difficult to obtain a reliable bond between the webs and the structured web without sophisticated machinery. There is also the requirement that the structured web be uniformly introduced between the webs. The invention proposes to feed these webs to a single common set of rolls and to arrange the flat sheet die of at least one extruder so close to a set of rolls that a reliable permanent bond to the structured web and/or at the other web is obtained by the heat accumulated and carried in the one web just extruded.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 1982Date of Patent: May 15, 1984Inventor: Heinz G. Patent number: 4288207Abstract: Disclosed is a melt-spinning process of the type wherein molten polymer is extruded downwardly through a filter pack and through an annular array of holes of a spinneret to form a circularly arranged group of filaments. Quench gas is delivered downwardly through said pack and spinneret coaxially relative to said row of holes and then redirected and discharged outwardly through the group of filaments. A finish substance is sprayed onto the filaments, and the filaments are gathered and redirected at a guide. The finish spraying comprises the steps of conducting the finish substance through the pack and through the spinneret internally of the flow of quench gas, and discharging the finish substance outwardly from within the group of filaments at a level below the discharge of quench gas.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1980Date of Patent: September 8, 1981Assignee: Fiber Industries, Inc.Inventor: William W. Patent number: 4256446Abstract: Apparatus for fabricating a prefinished wallboard wherein a layer of settable material is applied to one side of a wall panel and a decorative pattern is formed in relief in the settable material which, when set, is harder than the wall panel. A decorative coating may be applied to the relieved portions of the moldable material, and reinforcing and insulating members may be connected to the opposite side of the panel.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1979Date of Patent: March 17, 1981Assignee: Servando HinojosaInventors: Servando G. Patent number: 4133620Abstract: A polymer material in liquid form is continuously extruded through the spinning nozzles of a spinning head to thereby form filaments which drop downwardly through a blowing shaft positioned beneath the spinning nozzles. The filaments are entirely cooled, solidified and recrystallized during passage of the filaments through the blowing shaft. A drawing off roller in the form of a guide roller is located at the lower end of the blowing shaft to draw the filaments laterally from the blowing shaft, over a guide roller, and substantially vertically downwardly from the guide roller to a winding machine whereat the filaments are wound up. The winding machine is preferably located laterally of the blowing shaft, with the guide roller positioned at a level which is higher than the level of the drawing off roller. Thus, the filaments move from the drawing off roller to the guide roller in an upwardly inclined direction.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1977Date of Patent: January 9, 1979Assignee: Didier Engineering GmbHInventor: Karl Lehner

Patent number: 4132521Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for use in continuously and automatically forming a highly polished and lustrous surface on the exterior of an advancing billet of plastic material, such as soap, which emerges from the nozzle of an extrusion apparatus. The apparatus includes an enclosed reservoir containing a lubricating fluid that is compatible with the soap, so as to ensure a polished surface on the exterior surface of the soap. The apparatus embodies outlet means having a continuously smooth and generally tapered wall surface that defines an outlet opening for the cavity and is dimensioned and configured to be less than the cross-sectional dimension of the emerging soap by a predetermined amount so as to contact substantially the entire peripheral surface of the soap.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1977Date of Patent: January 2, 1979Assignee: Avon Products, Inc.Inventor: John F. Patent number: 4065238Abstract: Apparatus by which moulded articles are manufactured from clay, a continuously produced strand of the material in question is sprinkled with sand, whereafter at one location a piece is severed from the end of the strand at regular intervals, by a cutting apparatus, which piece then enters a mould. In the course of all phases of the process the strand and each severed piece thereof remain directed along one vertical downwardly directed line of movement.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1977Date of Patent: December 27, 1977Assignee: Machinefabriek W.
