Sprue Removal Patents (Class 425/DIG51)
  • Patent number: 6113828
Abstract: A high pressure multi-cavity injection molding system has an adjustable overflow cavity on each of the first to fill cavities. The volume of the overflow cavity is remotely adjustable without removing the overflow cavity from the system. In a mold system including a family of molds, the overflow cavities are sized so that the first to fill cavity(ies) and the overflow cavity(ies) fill at substantially the same pressure and time as the last to fill cavity. A looped gate passage is used to automatically sever the molded plastic at an edge of the cavities when the mold is opened. The looped gate passage does not constrict the flow of plastic into the cavities during the molding process.

In order to obtain a clean and smooth opening surface with a fit diameter that is as accurate as possible, the sprue part is axially offset relative to the injection molded part so that the integral connection between these two parts extends only over a part of the opening. The diameter of the axially projecting part is equal to or larger than the diameter of the opening and the rest of the opening being produced by injection molding. The dimensions are advantageously chosen so that a parting edge inclined at an angle of 45.degree. to the plane of the opening is formed and that the injection molded part amounts to 70% and the part to be separated to 30% of the length of the open. The injection molded length of the opening may also be variable.

  • Patent number: 3947210
Abstract: Apparatus for injection molding parts which comprises forming mold cavities from a set of molds and injecting molding material into the cavities to mold a part on a pin extending up in each cavity; the molded parts are then ejected by being pushed up and off the pins when the molds are moved to expose the parts; ejection involves the application of a substantially uniform force over the base of the moulded part. The apparatus includes means for automatically degating moulded parts from waste material involving initial movement of one of the molds in the set relative to the others; automatic degating can be employed which can occur internally or externally of the molded parts; the molds employed with these specific ejecting and degating means, or with other ejecting and degating means, comprise an upper and lower portion of a universal mold base which forms an integral part of the molding apparatus and to these portions are detachably secured modular mold sections.
