Abstract: This application is directed to a corn-based feed component formed from a combination of corn components. The feed components described herein generally include at least about 75 percent by weight of a combination of corn components. Generally, the corn components of the feed products are low in starch as compared to whole kernel corn, and are thus somewhat enriched in bran and germ (as determined, for example, on a dry mass basis). Typically, such feed components have a glycemic response comparable to that of rolled oats, thereby providing a source of energy that is safer than corn, and equally as safe as oats and high fat rice bran.

  • Patent number: 7495117
Abstract: A dietary source of mineral in the form of a metal carboxylate is prepared using the acid-base-like reaction. A salt of a carboxylate anion and a by-product cation is reacted in aqueous solution with a salt of a metal cation and a by-product anion under conditions which form a metal carboxylate and the by-product salt. Solutions formed in the reaction may be applied directly to a dry carrier to produce a dry dietary supplement or, alternatively, the solutions may be filtered to remove precipitated by-product salt and the filtrate used as a liquid dietary supplement. Preferably, a reducing agent, such as ascorbic acid, is added to help prevent the oxidation of divalent to trivalent form of a metal salt, when an easily oxidized divalent metal is used as starting material.

Abstract: According to the invention, there is provided null-LOX-1 barley and plant products produced thereof, such as malt manufactured by using barley kernels defective in synthesis of the fatty acid-converting enzyme lipoxygenase-1. Said enzyme accounts for the principal activity related to conversion of linoleic acid into 9-hydroperoxy octadecadienoic acid, a lipoxygenase pathway metabolite, which-through further enzymatic or spontaneous reactions may lead to the appearance of trans-2-nonenal. The invention enables brewers to produce a beer devoid of detectable trans-2-nonenal-specific off flavors, even after prolonged storage of the beverage.

  • Patent number: 7381550
Abstract: An ethanol unit and anaerobic digestion/bio-fertilizer unit are integrated with a cattle feedlot (or dairy operation), wherein a continuous, balanced process yields a sanitary, low- to zero-pollution, and economically efficient production of “clean beef” (or milk), fuel ethanol, and bio-gas/bio-fertilizer. Fossil fuel consumption is substantially reduced, even eliminated, and 100% of the cattle waste is treated in digesters wherein it is converted into medium-BTU gas (bio-gas), organic fertilizer and bio-compost. The ethanol unit serves the purposes of ethanol production, grain pretreatment to produce feed for the cattle and production of a thin stillage which is fed to the digesters. The grain is first processed in the ethanol unit, where the starch portion is converted into ethanol and CO2.

  • Patent number: 7371401
Abstract: An animal feed such as a milk replacer includes a soluble fiber and a sugar alcohol. The milk replacer enhances weight gain, starter intake and reduces weaning time. The method of feeding the animal includes feeding a mixture of a soluble fiber and sugar alcohol. The animal feed may be used as a method of weaning young ruminants such as calves.

  • Patent number: 7365242
Abstract: This invention concerns the construction of transgenic soybean lines wherein the expression of genes encoding seed storage proteins are modulated to effect a change in seed storage protein profile of transgenic plants. Modification of the seed storage protein profile can result in the production of novel soy protein products with unique and valuable functional characteristics.
