  • Patent number: 5616434
Abstract: Battery plate envelopes include a sheet of porous film material having a folded widthwise bottom edge and overlapped lateral edges to thereby form a pocket for receiving a battery plate therein. The overlapped lateral edges are joined to one another by a lengthwise extending series of discontinuous joining regions with adjacent ones of the discontinuous joining regions being separated by respective unsealed regions. These unsealed regions thereby establish respective lateral channels through which fluid (e.g., electrolyte employed in a wet storage battery) may pass to the interior pocket, and hence to the battery plate. The discontinuous joining regions are most preferably formed by passing the sheet material through the nip between opposed joining rings, each of which is provided with a series of triangularly-shaped teeth with smooth land areas formed between adjacent teeth series.

  • Patent number: 5182137
Abstract: A method of applying a bound particulate rubber outdoor surface comprises the initial step of providing a prepared base onto which the surface is to be applied. A primer layer is applied to the base, and is composed of a mixture including water such that the layer is wet when applied and dries as the water in the mixture evaporates. A fluidized stream of particulate rubber is directed onto the primer layer before the primer layer dries so that a layer of particulate rubber is formed on top of the primer layer and settles at least partially in the primer layer. Thereafter, the primer layer is allowed to dry before application of a binder layer over the particulate rubber. The binder layer also is composed of a mixture including water. A fluidized stream of particulate rubber is then directed onto the wet binder layer so that a layer of particulate rubber is formed ont op of and settles in the binder layer.

  • Patent number: 4382988
Abstract: A process for producing bituminous surfacing, bituminous surfacing produced y the process and hot plant mix for carrying out the process. To improve the resistance to fracture, the proposed bituminous surfacing contains metal fibers, for example steel fibers of finite length. These fibers can be admixed to the mix of solids mix and bituminous binder in the course of the preparation of the hot plant mix or in the course of laying the hot plant mix. Due to the compaction of the hot plant mix to form the bituminous surfacing, the metal fibres are bent and thus loop around the particles of the solids mix and/or form a network with one another to give a kind of random nonwoven fabric.
