  • Patent number: 8951605
Abstract: The current invention provides a fabrication method for large surface area, pinhole-free, ultra thin ion conducting membranes using atomic layer deposition on inexpensive sacrificial substrates to make cost effective, high performance fuel cells or electrolyzers. The resultant membrane electrode assembly (MEA) enables significant reduction in resistive losses as well as lowering of the operating temperature of the fuel cell. The invention further provides a method to deposit 3-dimensional surface conformal films that may have compositional grading for superior performance. In addition, the invention provides decoration and modification of electrode surfaces for enhanced catalytic activity and reduced polarization losses. The method of the current invention enables the MEA structure to be fabricated from the anode side up or the cathode side up, each with or without an incorporated anode current collector or cathode current collector, respectively.

  • Patent number: 7524536
Abstract: A method of protecting a surface includes applying to the surface a protective composition containing an aqueous wax emulsion. The composition prevents or reduces degradation of the surface of equipment in a facility where the surface is contacted by alkali metal silicate solutions. The compositions are useful, for example, in facilities for treating poultry or other meat carcasses with alkali metal silicates, in facilities for manufacturing detergents, in paper mills, and in any other facility using liquid alkali metal silicate.

  • Patent number: 7470290
Abstract: Hydroscopic polymer gels can be formed by applying a polymer to a surface and allowing water to be sequestered from the atmosphere into the polymer. The polymer gels are formed using methods and compositions employing water soluble or water dispersible copolymers having: (i) a first monomer that is acidic and is capable of forming an anionic charge in the composition; (ii) a second monomer that is amphipathic; (iii) optionally, a third monomer that is hydrophobic; and (iv) optionally, a fourth monomer that that has a permanent cationic charge or that is capable of forming a cationic charge on protonation. The polymer gels are particularly substantive and effective at modifying surfaces such as glass and hydrophobic polymeric substrates to provide soap scum and soil resistance, and easier next time cleaning benefits.

  • Patent number: 7358465
Abstract: A ceramic heater for heating a semiconductor wafer under processing and has a layered structure wherein on one surface of a supporting substrate made of carbon or a carbon-based composite material, successively formed layers including an insulating layer, and electroconductive layer as an electric heating element and a dielectric layer. A first step for partly or completely removing the layer or layers having degraded properties by means of a suitable method such as sandblasting and a second step of re-forming the layer or layers having been removed in the first step. The invention allows for a substantial cost decrease as compared with the conventional way by replacing the worn-out ceramic heater with a newly manufactured one.
