    Abstract: A flocked polyurethane foam fabric and method for manufacturing the same for which flock fibers imbedded in an adhesive on the foam are permanently flattened and entangled. Dry ink is transferred onto the flock fibers at the same time that flattening of the fibers is taking place. The flock fibers are thermally set into their flattened state along an outer surface of a polyurethane foam base of the fabric. Flattening the flock fibers causes the entanglement of the flock, thereby improving the hand, appearance, drapeability, abrasion resistance, water repellency and heat insulation qualities for apparel items over that of unflattened flock fibers.

The flocked yarn can be obtained by a method wherein for application of flock fibers onto an adhesive layer applied to the core yarn an electrostatic field in which an attractive force operates and an electrostatic field in which a repulsive force operates are applied either alternately by changing the polarity of one of a single pair of electrodes or, in a continuous process, sequentially by arranging two kinds of electrostatic fields. The flocked yarn thus obtained can have a good touch, a high flocking density and a high abrasion resistance.

Thus, when the flocked paper is peeled off from the surface of the material, a flock pattern of the predetermined shape is formed thereon.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for the production of napped surfaces that are textured lightly and irregularly. The surface of a substrate is coated with an adhesive and then covered with short textile fibers to form a layer of nap. After the adhesive hardens, the nap layer is subjected to mechanical deformation by permitting a plurality of balls made of a resilient material to bounce on the layer. The apparatus includes a panel of backing material support for the substrate, such as a panel of material which is to be treated and which already has a nap layer on its surface. Below the support is disposed a vibrator mechanism which causes the support together with the panel of material disposed thereon to vibrate. Above the support and the panel of material disposed thereon, there is a treatment chamber having lateral partitions and an impact ceiling. Within the treatment chamber there is a plurality of balls made of a resilient material.

In addition, the high voltage electrode in the flock tray is not energized until the flock tray has moved up and made contact with the garment holding platen to prevent flock from coming up out of the tray while the tray is moving up and down and to prevent any risk of shock to the operator. The platen is mounted on a rotatable shaft and diametrically opposed to a similar platen in an uppermost position which is operatively associated with a screen printer. In use, a printed substrate is flocked while an additional substrate is being printed.

    Abstract: A wallcovering comprising a fabric-backed, lightweight laminate is disclosed wherein the fabric is coated with various pigmented polymer coatings to which is applied a film of metallized polyethylene terephthalate. The metallized film is then flocked. Printed designs may be applied thereto prior to the addition of the flock.

    Abstract: A pattern is printed with adhesive as a design on certain selected areas of a shrinkable substrate and the adhesive is dried. Flock is preferably applied to the selected design prior to drying. Supplemental adhesive is then applied to other areas ("background" areas) of the substrate, and is dried. Preferably such supplemental adhesive is applied over the surface of the entire substrate and over the adhering flock that has already been applied, and the entire substrate plus existing flock is covered with additional flock, followed by drying of the adhesive.The entire substrate thus prepared is then subjected to shrinkage, causing differential shrinkage of the design areas and the background areas, and producing a fabric having a novel three-dimensional pattern or design.The fabric product preferably has a plurality of upstanding flock fibres and the substrate is shrunken more tightly in some areas than in others.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for making flocked heat transfers such that, when the resultant flocked heat transfer is applied to a receiving surface such as a garment, no objectionable thermoplastic deposit is left on the garment in the background areas of the flocked graphic design. The method comprises applying the flocked pattern onto a thermoplastic film carrier, placing an open mesh carrier cloth on top of the flocked pattern and film, and then applying a vacuum behind the cloth carrier while heating the sandwich structure to draw the heat softened thermoplastic film deep into the fibers of the carrier cloth of the heat transfer. The carrier cloth has a weave and absorbency so as to accept the thermoplastic material and retain it when the flocked heat transfer is finally applied to a receiving surface such as a garment, so that none of the film transfers to the garment in the background areas.
