A polymerizable protective coating is applied onto the substrate overlying the basecoat and the pattern. The protective coating seals the substrate and-is adapted for accepting a colorant to be applied by an end user. The protective coating is then polymerized. Additionally, if a porous substrate is provided, a sealer is applied prior to the liquid basecoat and is then cured.

    Abstract: A decorative relief finished surface is formed by applying to the surface of an object or substrate to be patterned an undercoat of coating material to a predetermined thickness, and forming an uneven pattern having a variety of projections on coated surface a plurality of times with a rolling device having a plurality of convex parts of curved continued, disconnected or perforated line shape which are formed in a random manner, with the intervals between the convex parts being substantially equal to each other, or by spraying coating material with a spray gun so as to form a multiplicity of projections of varying height. Then, the top portions of the projections of the partially hardened surface which extend beyond a predetermined height are pressed with a pressing roll, such that the projections are uniformly flattened to a predetermined thickness while the rest of the convex parts are left unflattened. The pressing roll is made of a hard or semi-hard, air-permeable, porous material.

    Abstract: A fibrous building element such as a panel which can be used for roofs, soffits and walls. The fibrous element is coated on the side which will be positioned on the exterior of a building structure with a material which forms a crackled surface. The crackled surface permits water vapor or steam from the interior of the structure to pass through the panel. The crackled surface presents a surface-active hydrophobic agent to prevent rain, snow and moisture from penetrating the panel. The surface-active hydrophobic agent may be applied to the outer face of the crackled surface coating or may be mixed in the crackled surface coating.

    Abstract: This relates to a method of decorating a panel having a multi-level pattern of ridges and recesses on a major surface thereof. This patterned major surface is coated with a liquid pigmented material and is thereafter rollingly contacted under pressure with a roll having a resilient surface. The resilient roll picks up liquid pigmented material from the higher portions of the pattern while at the same time the pigmented material which has been picked up from the panel surface is continually removed or cleaned from the roll surface. Thereafter, the pigmented material which remains on the panel surface is at least partially dried or cured. In the preferred form of the invention the panel surface has a layer of paper integrally combined therewith, the paper having a printed surface thereon which complements the multi-level surface pattern of the panel.
