    Abstract: Novel compositions and methods are provided for forming masks used in air brash painting. The masking compositions used in this invention are liquids as applied and are hardenable into a friable paint masking layer. The preferred compositions of this invention are comprised of a hydratable binder, such as plaster of Paris, an inert filler, such as calcium carbonate, and water. The amount of the filler is selected relative to the amount of the binder to substantially weaken and make friable the resulting hardened layer. In the method of this invention the composition is applied to the area of a substrate to be masked. The applied layer if desired is shaped with a tool to provide details in the resulting mask. The layer is then hardened to form a brittle friable masking layer directly adhered to surface of the substrate. The substrate is then airbrush painted. The mask is removed by fracturing the mask and removing the resulting particles.

    Abstract: A process for finally finishing a surface of a bronze sculpture that is then waxed with at least a single wax coating. In a practice of the invention, to a bronze surface that has been polished and preliminarily buffed, a low pressure grit material flow is directed against a section of the bronze surface as a final surface texturing step and, where a surface or surfaces adjacent to the section is to be painted, patinaed, or is to receive a like surface finish, a selected plastic material is used to coat the section of the bronze surface, which material is applied as a liquid and dries to a flexible surface that adheres to so as to essentially render the bronze surface imperious to contamination with paint, water, or the like. After application of paint, patina, or the like, the plastic material coating is stripped away by a painter/operator using a tool or tools, such as a pair of tweezers, to remove the coating. Whereafter the sculpture surface is waxed.

The grooves have substantially uniform widths of about 100 to about 500 micrometers, with adjacent grooves of each set being spaced about 10 to about 250 millimeters apart.

    Abstract: An interference filter or coating is provided in a predetermined pattern on a lamp envelope. The coating is comprised of alternating layers of high and low index of refraction materials applied to a vitreous outer surface of a lamp envelope. The coating may be geometrically symmetric or asymmetric, continuous or discontinuous with respect to the coating itself or the envelope to which it has been applied. The envelope can be masked prior to deposition of the coating so that removal of the mask leaves the filter in the desired pattern. The preferred process for forming the coating includes forming a boric oxide mask on a portion of the envelope, applying the coating over the mask and removing the coating from masked areas of the envelope by dissolving the mask in an aqueous solution.

The sensitized and activated substrate is then contacted with an aqueous dry film photoresist, which is then imaged and developed to form a predetermined electrical circuit pattern, using conventional methods.

The restrictor also reduces convective heat losses which may arise because of the large temperature gradient surrounding the catalytically active detector element. Finally, a microminiature combustible gas sensor comprising a flashback arrestor with one or more generally linear capillaries for preventing flashback is provided.

    Abstract: A photoresist-free method for making patterned films of metal oxides, metals, or other metal containing compounds is described. The method involves applying an amorphous film of a metal complex to a substrate. The film may be conveniently applied by spin coating using standard industry techniques. The metal complex used is photoreactive and undergoes a low temperature chemical reaction in the presence of light of a suitable wavelength. The end product of the reactions depends upon the atmosphere in which the reactions take place. Metal oxide films may be made in air. Patterned films may be made by exposing only selected portions of the film to light. Patterns of two or more materials may be laid down from the same film by exposing different parts of the film to light in different atmospheres. The resulting patterned film is generally planar. Separate planarization steps are not generally required.

    Abstract: Method for thermally-machining large area features, and screen-depositing metallurgy on a ceramic dielectric greensheet. The method comprises an improvement over the conventional integrated disposable mask process, and involves the steps of outlining the large feature areas through a masking film laminated to a greensheet, using a high intensity energy beam such as a laser beam, electron beam, photon beam, etc, forming a stencil sheet having corresponding large area feature openings, and laminating the stencil sheet in registration over the masking film. An adhesive sheet is pressed against the back of the stencil sheet, through the stencil openings, to adhere to the outline features on the masking film and to remove them when the stencil sheet is separated from the masking film. Conductive paste is applied to the greensheet, through the large feature openings in the masking film, and the electroded greensheet is fired for use in preparing multi-layer ceramic packages.

    Abstract: A low temperature batch method for forming and positioning permanent magnets on electromagnetically actuated micro-fabricated components, such as electrical switches employs a first adhesive, such as a Siltem/epoxy blend of an epoxy resin and a siloxane polyimide polymer, to releasably attach a mold layer of Kapton polyimide to a substrate, which may be the movable portion of a micromechanical structure, or a precursor to such movable portion. A well-shape cavity is formed in the mold layer, and filled with a slurry of rare earth NdFeB magnetic particles suspended in a second adhesive, which is cured to form the body of a magnet. The second adhesive is an SPI/epoxy blend, also of an epoxy resin and a siloxane polyimide polymer, but with a greater adhesion strength and a higher temperature softening point compared to the Siltem/epoxy blend. The entire structure is heated, and the mold layer is pulled off the substrate, while the body of magnetic material remains firmly attached.

    Abstract: A method for producing a silica mask on metal oxide surface is disclosed. Benzaldehyde is adsorbed on neutral or weak alkaline metal oxide surface, and then tetra-methoxy silane is deposited. The tetra-methoxy silane is hydrolyzed by water vapor into silica and the adsorbed benzaldehyde is removed by NH3 as benzo-nitrile. Thus a silica mask is produced on the metal oxide surface, and the mask has vacancies corresponding to the removed benzaldehyde. The vacancies act as the adsorption sites for shape selective adsorption.

    Abstract: A fabrication method of a printed wiring board in which the halation effect of light irradiated to a solder resist film is utilized in a process of selectively removing the solder resist film. After a conductive layer is patterned to a given circuit pattern including soldering pads, the solder resist film is formed on the base material to cover the patterned conductive layer. The solder resist film is selectively exposed to light utilizing reflection of the irradiated light from the insulating base material and developed so that the solder resist film is selectively left in areas adjacent to the respective soldering pads. Then, an etching resist film is formed to cover the patterned conductive layer except for the soldering pads, and surface areas of the respective soldering pads are selectively etched using the etching resist film as a mask to produce solder resist dams made of the solder resist film left on the base material. Solder films are formed on the respective soldering pads thus selectively etched.

    Abstract: A method of producing a depth enhanced printed product uses a screen printer. An optic screen of finely spaced lines are formed as a cured emulsion on a mesh silk-screen. A clear gel is extruded through the mesh screen onto the front side of a clear plastic sheet, creating an array of lenses. An image is previously printed on the back side of the plastic sheet using an offset printer. An optic grid of lines are superimposed in the image. The optic grid has a relationship with the lenses to create special effects such as depth enhancement.

    Abstract: A magnetoresistive (MR) read transducer assembly having passive end regions separated by a central active region, and a method of fabricating it. Layers of a first biasing material and a nonmagnetic decoupling spacer material are deposited on a substrate, then covered by a mask only in the central region. By etching or ion milling, those parts of the layers not covered by the mask are removed to define a transverse biasing means in the central region and define the passive end regions. With the same mask remaining in place, a conductive material and exchange layer comprising a second biasing material are deposited over all regions. The mask is removed to define and provide conductor leads and longitudinal biasing means only in the end regions. MR material is thereafter deposited as a continuous thin film in direct contact with the central region containing the transverse biasing means and in direct contact with the end regions containing the longitudinal biasing means.

    Abstract: A surface coating composition comprising generally cement, sand, a polymer binder, and water, and a method for applying the composition to a surface. The composition is used to apply an ornamental surface coating onto a pre-existing cementitious surface, or a surface to which a cementitious base layer has been applied. The surface is cleaned with a muriatic acid solution. A flexible plastic template is laid on the surface to define the desired pattern and a thin layer of the composition is applied. The template is removed after the composition is applied. After the composition starts to cure, the surface is wiped with a damp sponge to round off corners and open up surface pores. The surface is sealed after curing. Texturizing rollers may be used to provide a more realistic finish. The coating is tough and durable, and can withstand up to approximately 6,000 psi (about 400 kg/cm.sup.2) pressure.

Generally, the strip (10) is a plasticised polymer in the form of a triangular cross section having one side (14) longer than the other two (15, 18).

The flexible sheet to which the predetermined pattern of printing fluid is to be applied is placed over the table and template so that the pattern formed in the template is aligned with the sheet in the desired location. A vacuum is pulled on the vacuum table to cause the flexible sheet to be drawn down into the template through the openings defining the predetermined pattern.

The mat is placed in contact with the substrate on which a detectible warning is desired. A blend is created from a curable viscous substance and one or more of the following: reinforcing elements, reflective elements, pigments, or abrasives.
