  • Patent number: 8875653
Abstract: A solar cell extrusion printing system that uses a micro-extrusion printhead to print longer central gridlines and one or more pairs of shorter “side” gridlines such that end points of the gridline sets form step patterns on an octagonal (pseudo-square) substrate. The printhead includes a set of central nozzles that receive ink from a first valve by way of a first flow channel to print the longer central gridlines, and additional sets of side nozzles that receive ink from additional valves by way of additional flow channels to print the shorter “side” gridlines. The central nozzles have outlet orifices that offset in the process direction from side outlet orifices of the side nozzles. A start signal is simultaneously sent to the valves such that ink is substantially simultaneously extruded through both the central and side orifices, whereby the extruded ink produces gridline endpoints having the desired step pattern.

Abstract: A method is provided for controlling printed ink horizontal cross-sectional areas using fluoropolymer templates. The method initially forms a fluoropolymer template overlying a substrate. The fluoropolymer template has a horizontal first cross-sectional dimension. Then, a primary ink is printed overlying the fluoropolymer template having a horizontal second cross-sectional dimension less than the first cross-sectional dimension. In the case of a fluoropolymer line having a template length greater than a template width, where the template width is the first cross-sectional dimension, printing the primary ink entails printing a primary ink line having an ink length greater than an ink width, where the ink width is the second cross-sectional dimension. In one aspect, the method prints a plurality of primary ink layers, each primary ink layer having an ink width less than the template width. Each overlying primary ink layer can be printed prior to solvents in underlying primary ink layers evaporating.

Abstract: A gas turbine engine component with an aluminide coating on at least a portion of an airflow surface that includes a roughening agent effective to provide a desired surface roughness and a deposition process for forming such aluminide coatings. A layer including a binder and the roughening agent may be applied to the superalloy substrate of the component and the aluminide coating formed on the airflow surface portion by exposing the component and layer to an appropriate deposition environment. Suitable roughening agents include metal and ceramic particles that are dispersed on the airflow surface portion before exposure to the deposition environment. The particles, which are substantially intact after the aluminide coating is formed, are dispersed in an effective number to supply the desired surface roughness.

Abstract: In applying an application liquid onto a substrate and forming a line-like pattern, discharging of the application liquid is initiated from an inward position X0 which is inward from an originally intended start position X1, while keeping the amount of the gap between a nozzle and the substrate to a smaller value G0 than the height of the pattern. Following this, the nozzle moves toward outside the substrate while moving away from the substrate, and the reverses its movement direction at the pattern start position X1. Near a posterior end as well, the nozzle moves closer to the substrate while reducing the discharged quantity of the application liquid, and the movement direction is reversed while moving the nozzle away at a pattern end position X3.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method or device for recognizing a structure, preferably a bead or trace of adhesive material (20), which is to be applied to a substrate (30), with the aid of at least two cameras, more particularly three or more cameras (12, 13, 14). The structure, which is to be applied, is applied to the substrate using an applicator device (11), whereupon the structure, which is applied to the substrate by means of the applicator device, is monitored by the cameras in such a way that the cameras are oriented towards the applied structure with at least one overlapping area, wherein the applied structure, particularly the edges of the trace of adhesive, is determined on a revolving orbit around the applicator device and the revolving orbit is pre-defined in such a way that the applied structure intersects the revolving orbit after it has been applied to the substrate.

Abstract: Systems and methods for discontinuously applying an insulating primer to a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) component are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method for mitigating electrical surface discharges from a CFRP component includes first applying an insulating primer to a metallic component. Next, an insulating primer is applied discontinuously to the CFRP component adjacent the metallic component. The discontinuous application of the insulating primer forms a primed portions and unprimed portions. The unprimed portions are configured to enable electrostatic dissipation.

Abstract: A method for high resolution ink-jet print using a pre-patterned substrate employs an ink-jet printing device including an ink-jet head for discharging conductive ink droplets and a driving stage for supporting a substrate to which the conductive ink droplets are hit, to draw a fine line width pattern on the substrate. The method includes (A) forming a stripe pattern with repeated stripes on a substrate surface on which a fine line width pattern will be formed, thereby preparing a pre-patterned substrate; (B) loading the substrate to the ink-jet printing device; and (C) injecting conductive ink droplets to a substrate region where the stripe pattern is formed. An equivalent interval (d) of the stripe pattern and a fine line width (D) of the drawn fine line width pattern satisfy a relation of d<<D, and the hit ink droplets are flowed in an anisotropic form within the region.

Abstract: A liquid dispensing module and nozzle or die tip for discharging at least one liquid filament. The nozzle includes a strand guide for guiding a substrate past the nozzle and a frustoconical protrusion disposed on a surface of the nozzle adjacent the notch. A liquid discharge passage extends along an axis through the frustoconical protrusion and forms an acute angle with a machine direction corresponding to movement of the strand past the nozzle. Four air discharge passages are positioned at the base of the frustoconical protrusion. Each of the air discharge passages is angled in a compound manner generally toward the liquid discharge passage and offset from the axis of the liquid discharge passage to create the controlled pattern of liquid material on the strand.

Abstract: A system and method for locating lost golf balls is described. In one embodiment, a plurality of small RFID chips are applied to or embedded in a ball. When the ball is to be located, a user uses a ball finder to receive RF signals from the RFID chips and locate the ball. The ball finder may have useful additional features such as overlaid maps to help and GIS data to help the user find the ball. In an alternative embodiment, a ball is prepared by applying a highly-reflective paint, such as a metallic paint, or a highly-absorbent paint such as a black iron ball paint, to create a characteristic radar signature for the ball. The ball finder may then be configured to locate the ball using the characteristic radar signature.
