Abstract: A method of forming a self-cleaning coating on a substrate comprises the step of selecting a substrate, cleaning the substrate, and/or roughening the substrate using an abrasive. In an embodiment, roughening of the substrate create microscopic tortuous grooves. Another embodiment of the method comprises coating the roughened surface with at least one hydrophobic chemical agent. In an exemplary embodiment, the hydrophobic chemical agent covalently binds with the substrate creating nanoscopic grooves. Another embodiment of the present disclosure pertains to an apparatus for depositing a self-cleaning coating on a flat substrate. A further embodiment of the present disclosure pertains to a self-cleaning coating on a substrate comprising a hydrophobic chemical agent covalently bonded to at least one roughened surface of the substrate.

  • Patent number: 8609186
Abstract: The presently disclosed subject matter provides a method for manufacturing a coating film whereby a problem of planarity in a plastic film wound up into a roll form can be eliminated and the coating film can be formed uniformly and precisely. There is therefore provided a method for manufacturing a coating film in which a plastic film wound into a roll form is wound off to be allowed to run and is fed while winding the film around a heat roller so as to eliminate deformations in the plastic film, and then a coating liquid is applied onto the plastic film, wherein in a position where wrinkles begin to form in the plastic film due to heating by the heat roller, the plastic film is pneumatically pressed by air jetted from an air nozzle at a pressure equal to or higher than a pressure at which the wrinkles disappear.

Abstract: A general-use white color reflecting material, and a process for production thereof are provided. The white color reflecting material, without troublesome surface treatment such as formation of a reflective layer by plating, is capable of reflecting a near-ultraviolet ray of a wavelength region of 380 nm or longer or a near-infrared ray sufficiently without light leakage; does not become yellow even when exposed to near-ultraviolet rays; has excellent lightfastness, heat resistance, and weatherability; has high mechanical strength and chemical stability; is capable of maintaining a high degree of whiteness; and is easily moldable at a low cost. Further a white color reflecting material used as an ink composition for producing the white color reflecting material in a film shape is also provided.

Abstract: Provided herein is a low cost high performance light weight hard drive cover that is injection molded. The hard drive top cover has a flange portion that applies pressure to an elastomeric seal preventing ingress of moisture dust and other contaminants into the sensitive components. The flange portion is reinforced with a plurality of metallic strips that are placed between pressure application locations embedded within the polymer flange. The viscoelastic creep response of the polymer flange does not contribute to relaxation of pressure on the elastomeric seal due to the presence of the metallic reinforcement strips. The metallic reinforcement strips may have a convex curvature between pressure application locations. The metallic reinforcement strip may have apertures for passage of injection molded polymer creating delamination free intimate bond between the polymer in the flange and the metallic reinforcement strip.

Abstract: Enzyme catalyst immobilized on porous flouropolymer supports. Catalytically active enzymes can be bound to a variety of fluoropolymer supports for use as a reaction catalyst. Moreover, consistently high rate of conversion during catalyst re-use over time is achieved. Furthermore, inactive enzyme catalyst can be stripped from the support and fresh enzyme can be bound to the support to achieve the original conversion rate. The immobilization of catalytic enzymes on porous fluoropolymers is a viable and novel technology for the preparation of advantaged catalysts.

Abstract: Processes are described herein for preparing medical devices and other articles having a low-fouling surface on a substrate comprising a polymeric surface. The polymeric surface material may possess a range of polymeric backbones and substituents while providing the articles with a highly efficient, biocompatible, and non-fouling surface. The processes involve treating the substrate to reduce the concentration of chemical species on the surface of or in the substrate without altering the bulk physical properties of the device or article, and thereafter forming a grafted polymer layer on the treated substrate surface.
