Abstract: A painting kit includes one or more paint pads and a paint tray. The paint tray includes a reservoir for holding a supply of paint, and means for transferring paint to a paint pad. In one embodiment the paint tray includes a rotating cylinder to transfer paint from the paint reservoir to one or more paint pads. In another embodiment, one or more paint pedestal surfaces are coated with paint from the reservoir in order to transfer paint to paint pads. Each of the paint pads and the trays includes features to selectively apply paint to the paint pad and to avoid applying paint to selected longitudinal edges of the paint pad. The lack of paint along the longitudinal edges helps to prevent paint from dripping or being forced from the longitudinal edge onto adjacent dry surfaces, and thereby enables a user to paint uniformly near edges while avoiding adjacent areas.

Abstract: A method is provided for applying a superhydrophilic coating to a surface of a sonobuoy and acoustic sensors. A variety of different processed and chemistries can be used to make superhydrophilic coatings including polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide and nanoporous silica. Application to the surface can be by dipping, painting and spraying. Once applied to the outer surface of the acoustic sensor and specifically the sonobuoy, the sonobuoy can be handled/stored/deployed under existing procedures. Titanium dioxide and nanoporous silica are inorganic materials that would have to be inter-mixed with the coating. The coating allows a surface of the sonobuoy to wet completely upon immersion into a fluid thereby minimizing the formation of air bubbles on the surface whereby the suppression of bubble formation allows the sonobuoy to immediately generate high quality acoustic data.

Abstract: A method of coating a surface, preparing a doped metal-ion precursor solution for coating, and an article including a component coated by the described method are disclosed. The method of coating includes applying a fluoro-silane doped metal-ion precursor solution on the surface to form a coated surface. The metal-ion precursor solution includes greater than about 0.6 molar percent concentration of a metal-ion precursor in a solvent comprising an alcohol. The method of preparing the doped metal-ion precursor solution includes dissolving a metal-ion precursor in a solvent comprising an alcohol at a temperature greater than about 100° C. and refluxing at a temperature greater than about 150° C. such that the concentration of metal-ion precursor in the solution is greater than 0.6 molar percent of the solution, and adding a fluoro-silane to the metal-ion precursor solution.

Abstract: A glow-in-the-dark marking pen that is intended for use for marking structures during search and rescue operations, particularly during a fire, is herein disclosed. The glow-in-the-dark properties of the ink are activated by breaking an inner glass tube contained within the plastic marker body and shaking it. The cap is removed and the pen can be used upon various surfaces as needed. The glow-in-the-dark ability of the ink allows others to see writing in diminished lighting environments, such as emergency personnel who wish to alert other personnel that a room of a structure is being checked or has been checked.
