Patent number: 8147943Abstract: A thermal protection system capable of withstanding impact loads without a detrimental effect to its main function, i.e. a protection of the vehicle from high temperature during re-entry or flight in the atmosphere. The system consists of the outer ceramic matrix composite shield, a ceramic tile sandwiched between the shield and the skin of the vehicle and fasteners joining the system and the protected structure. The ceramic matrix composite fasteners are capable of working in the same high-temperature environment as the rest of thermal protection system. They are also strong and stiff due to the presence of ceramic fibers. Cracks in the outer shield produced by impact cannot propagate into the ceramic tile since the shield and tile materials are discontinuous along the interface. The tile cannot disintegrate from the vehicle since it is pressed to its skin by the outer shield. The system can easily be disassembled for inspection and/or repair.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 2009Date of Patent: April 3, 2012Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventors: Larry W. Publication number: 20090087259Abstract: A hybrid joint of dissimilar materials capable of bearing structural loads without long term creep due to a fiber stack in direct bearing of shear pins, studs, or legs on the lateral surfaces of multitudes of high-modulus fibers. The shear pins, studs, or legs may be welded onto a metal member and precisely incorporated into the composite during textile assembly prior to resin infusion and cure.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 26, 2008Publication date: April 2, 2009Inventor: David S. Patent number: 7507462Abstract: A plastic sheet that includes a first surface and a second surface, which intersect with each other on an imaginary line. The first surface and the second surface have a first straight line and a second straight line, respectively. A first line segment connecting an end of a cutout portion, which is provided on the second line, to an end opposite to the other end of a cutout part, which is provided on the first line, is orthogonal to the imaginary line.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 2006Date of Patent: March 24, 2009Assignee: Mitsubishi Denki Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Kenji Teramoto

Publication number: 20090075025Abstract: In an electronic component soldering method of connecting a terminal provided on a flexible substrate to an electrode of a rigid substrate, after solder-mixed resin in which solder particles are mixed in thermosetting resin has been applied onto the rigid substrate so as to cover the electrode, the flexible substrate is put on the rigid substrate and heat-pressed, whereby there are formed a resin part that bonds the both substrates by thermosetting of the thermosetting resin, and a solder part which is surrounded by the resin part and has narrowed parts in which the peripheral surface is narrowed inward in the vicinity of the terminal surface and in the vicinity of the electrode surface. Hereby, the solder parts are soldered to the electrodes and the terminal at acute contact angles so that the production of shape-discontinuities which lowers fatigue strength can be eliminated.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 22, 2006Publication date: March 19, 2009Applicant: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., LtdInventors: Mitsuru Ozono, Tadahiko Sakai, Hideki Eifuku

Publication number: 20090068398Abstract: An apparatus and method for splicing tapes dispensed from a tape dispenser. According to one embodiment, a first, running or unwinding roll of tape is provided with a first splicing element secured to its trailing end portion. A second, stationary or standby roll of tape is provided with a second splicing element secured to its leading end portion. The second splicing element comprises a body made of a self-supporting material and formed with at least one aperture sized to receive the tape from the first roll. While tape is being dispensed from the first roll, the running tape is inserted into the aperture of the second splicing element. When the first roll of tape becomes depleted, the first splicing element engages the second splicing element, thereby splicing the leading end portion of the second tape roll to the trailing end portion of the first tape roll.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 12, 2008Publication date: March 12, 2009Inventors: Vartan Mailyan, Dennis A. Publication number: 20090017255Abstract: A dielectric line having a sufficient ensured strength and being suitable for mass production and a production method therefor are provided. The production method is a method for manufacturing a dielectric line having a dielectric strip which is provided between two conductive plates approximately parallel to each other and which has a width smaller than that of the conductive plates, and dielectric medium layers which are filled between the conductive plates other than the dielectric strip and which is composed of a porous material having a dielectric constant smaller than that of the dielectric strip.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 3, 2008Publication date: January 15, 2009Inventors: Masakatsu Maruyama, Nobuyuki Kawakami, Yoshito Fukumoto, Takayuki Hirano

Publication number: 20080307793Abstract: An assembly including a metal piece, a piece made of ceramic material, and at least one intermediate connection element assembled to each of the pieces by brazing. The intermediate connection element includes a deformable sheet presenting at least two flat zones brazed to respective ones of the pieces, the two flat zones being interconnected by a deformable zone presenting at least two free undulations oriented in alternation towards the metal piece and towards the piece made of ceramic material.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 8, 2006Publication date: December 18, 2008Applicants: SNECMA, COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIEInventors: Joel Michel Daniel Benoit, Jean-Francois Fromentin, Olivier Gillia, Pascal Revirand

Patent number: 7464446Abstract: Method for obtaining an improved but easily adjustable and releasable frictional engagement between two contact surfaces. According to the method, both contact surfaces are provided with material layers (2, 4) which, when there is low contact pressure between the contact surfaces, ensure that these surfaces are able to move comparatively easily in relation to each other, but, when there is higher contact pressure, these material layers engage in each other and make relative movement between the contact surfaces impossible or substantially difficult. This can be achieved by means of both contact surfaces being flocked with a layer of short fibers (5), in particular synthetic fibers. The invention also relates to an arrangement for obtaining an improved frictional engagement between two contact surfaces and to objects provided with such contact surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 2001Date of Patent: December 16, 2008Inventor: Dan Johansson
