Patent number: 4632854Abstract: A web of packaging material made of heat sealable plastic sheeting has two parallel rows of cover portions sealed to the outer surface of the sheeting and arranged eccentrically to the longitudinal center of the web. The cover portions are made of a material which is stiffer than the plastic sheeting and which can be welded to it, preferably plastic coated cardboard or paper. Each cover portion is of approximately equal size and shape and are equally spaced longitudinally along the web. At least one row of cover portions is preferably sealed to the plastic sheeting by an inner cover strip at a surface eccentric to the geometric center of the cover portion and includes a ring pull to facilitate the opening of a subsequently formed package. In an alternate embodiment, only one row of cover portions is sealed to the outer surface of the web along the longitudinal center.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 1985Date of Patent: December 30, 1986Assignee: Tetra Pak Developpement S.A.Inventors: Ingemar Ohlsson, Finn T. Patent number: 4621442Abstract: A multilayer label comprises a front sheet having an adhesive-coated side. A multilayer folded leaflet member adheres to a portion of the adhesive coated side in a position spaced from the ends of the front sheet. A first line of tearing weakness is defined on the front sheet, with the folded leaflet defining a short-folded front layer adhering to the adhesive-coated side. Thus an edge of the front layer lies spaced from parallel edges of the folded leaflet, and some of the adhesive-coated side adheres to the folded layer of the leaflet member adjacent the front layer. Tearing of the first line of weakness exposes the leaflet member, a portion of which may preferably be removable by tearing a second line of weakness formed in the leaflet member.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 1985Date of Patent: November 11, 1986Assignee: Pamco Label Co.Inventor: Jory B. Patent number: 4617211Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for skiving and hemming one or more edges of a paperboard web or blank to improve the sealing qualities of a container made from the paperboard. The paperboard is skived twice generally parallel to its edge, once to define an oblique surface and once to make a flat skived surface. The latter is folded over the former and heat-sealed to a heat sealable material adjacent the skived region, defining a wedge-shaped edge portion. The folded over part is preferably ironed to produce a substantially flat sheet, and the wedge-shaped edge is preferably reshaped at some point in the process to make the entire folded over surface substantially flush with the unskived surface to which it is sealed. The flat skived surface is preferably made by a milling procedure in which the milling teeth strike the material while moving in a direction opposite to that of the motion of the material.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1985Date of Patent: October 14, 1986Assignee: International Paper CompanyInventor: Carl J. Patent number: 4613536Abstract: A packaging foil for foods and other everyday goods, the foil being composed of two or more barrier layers as well as plastic coatings between the barrier layers and which form the outer surfaces of the foil; in addition, the invention provides for a method of manufacturing the foil. With the object of achieving a thin, stiff and accordingly advantageous foil, the packaging foil has been formed by joining together and sealing sheets containing one barrier layer, one side of said sheets having been covered with a layer of plastic intended for the protection of the inner layer and outer layer and the other side with a layer of plastic intended for separating and insulating the barrier layers.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1984Date of Patent: September 23, 1986Assignee: Printal OYInventor: Antero Makilaakso

Patent number: 4605577Abstract: The present invention relates to a system for packaging and a method of using double-faced adhesive tape. A strip of waxed or otherwise non-stick material is folded to form a pocket in which a piece of double-faced tape having a hold tab at one end thereof is inserted such that the hold tab projects from without the pocket. To apply the tape, the wrapper and projecting hold tab are positioned between two pieces of material that are intended to be taped together. A pull tab, which is connected to the wrapper, extends out from between the two pieces of material. Pressure is then applied to the material surrounding the hold tab in order to retain the hold tab in position, and the pull tab is pulled away from the hold tab and tape. As a result, the non-stick wrapper is removed from the tape, leaving the double-faced tape and the attached hold tab in position between the two materials that are being taped together.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 1985Date of Patent: August 12, 1986Inventor: Steven H. Patent number: RE34366Abstract: A label for attachment to a container, the label comprising a longitudinal strip which is divided into a series of panels by a plurality of transverse fold lines, the strip being folded about the transverse fold lines so that one end panel and the adjacent panel form rear and front cover panels, respectively, which envelope the remaining panel or panels of the folded strip, the rear cover panel of the strip being shorter in the longitudinal direction than at least the front cover panel and a third panel, which is adjacent the front panel, extending beyond the free end of the rear cover panel and having a rearwardly directed over-lapping portion; and a support web to which is adhered the rear face of the rear cover panel, the over-lapping portion being releasably adhered to the support web so as to maintain the folded label in a closed configuration, the arrangement being such that the label can be opened by detaching the over-lapping portion from the support web.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 1989Date of Patent: September 7, 1993Inventor: David J.
