Patent number: 5545476Abstract: A highly glossy thick aesthetic laminate surface layer is achieved by using pre-cured particulates of the impregnating resin preferably along with an initial binder material and abrasion resistant mineral particles. The protective overcoating may be applied in a thick layer to give gouge resistance and a deep look in the glossy laminate. Patent number: 5441791Abstract: A synthetic diamond wafer grown by deposition from a plasma has a smooth, substrate side face and a rough, deposition side face. The rough face is coated with a bonding agent which fills the valleys and is finished so that its surface is parallel to the substrate side face to permit photolithographic processing of the wafer. Also disclosed is a multi-wafer laminate of two or more diamond film layers bonded together with an interlayer. Smooth, flat outer faces of the layers are oriented mutually parallel. The inner, bonded faces may be rough. A filler of diamond particles in the bonding agent improves the thermal conductivity of the laminate.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 1993Date of Patent: August 15, 1995Assignee: Norton CompanyInventor: Richard C. Patent number: 5415919Abstract: Materials, particularly wood materials and calcium carbonate-containing materials such as concrete and marble, can be protected from the growth of algae by being treated with a compound containing tin covalently bonded to a silylating group such that cleavage of the covalent bonds due to hydrolysis or photolysis is minimized, thus making the treatment ecologically safe. One such compound is (n-Bu).sub.3 SnCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 Si(OEt).sub.3. The tin compound can either be incorporated into raw materials from which materials are to be made, or it can be applied to the finished materials. When the tin compound is applied to a material that is algae streaked, the streaking should disappear.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1994Date of Patent: May 16, 1995Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Billy L. Patent number: 5413835Abstract: A magnetic recording medium includes a successively formed uneven underlayer and magnetic layer. In the process of forming the underlayer, grains of an alloy, whose melting point is in the range of approximately 100 degrees centigrade to approximately 350 degrees centigrade, are deposited on a substrate by using either an evaporation or a sputtering method, while maintaining the substrate temperature at a temperature which allows molten spheres of the alloy to be formed. The preferred alloys include Zn, Mg, Al, In, and Sn systems whose melting points fall within the above-mentioned temperature range. The preferred substrate temperatures are not higher than the melting point of the alloy to be deposited plus 50 degrees centigrade, and most preferably, temperatures equal to approximately the melting point of the alloy to be deposited minus 20 degrees centigrade. The result is a magnetic recording medium suitable for practical use which can be fabricated at a low cost.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1993Date of Patent: May 9, 1995Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Yoshihiro Ikeda, Shinji Takayama

Patent number: 5405681Abstract: A synthetic resin decorative material including an antistatic layer containing an electrically conductive film formed on a surface thereof without changing the color, design and pattern of the decorative material. The synthetic resin may be a synthetic resin decorative sheet/plate. The antistatic function of the antistatic layer is improved such that occurrence of cracks in the antistatic layer can be prevented when the decorative material having the antistatic layer is thermally molded. To prepare the decorative material, a transfer sheet is pressed while being heated onto a surface of a synthetic resin decorative base material including a synthetic resin sheet or plate. To prepare the transfer sheet, electrically conductive paint containing an electrically conductive matter formed by coating inorganic fine powder having a refractive index of 1.4 to 1.7 with an electrically conductive tin oxide is applied onto a 1 to 5 .mu.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1992Date of Patent: April 11, 1995Assignee: C.I. Patent number: 5397620Abstract: A structure and related method for forming a surface on which sports activities occur. The disclosed structure uses three basic layers to form the surface on top of a prepared substrate. The first layer is comprised of a plurality of sublayers bound together by adhesive coatings, the first of which requires deposition of resilient particles in the 3 to 6 millimeter size range. Several subsequent sublayers include smaller-sized particles which, after deposition and spreading, result in a relatively smooth and resilient latex-bound base mat. The second layer provides a cushion coating, while a slightly textured decorative finish coating results from application of the third and final top layer. A method for forming these three layers is also disclosed which method specifies both the sizes of particles and the spread rate for particles and adhesive material for each of the sublayers in the first layer.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1993Date of Patent: March 14, 1995Assignee: Thomas D.
