  • Patent number: 7507380
Abstract: Embodiments of an apparatus, system, and method for chemical synthesis and/or analysis are disclosed. One embodiment of a disclosed apparatus comprises a laminated, microfluidic structure defining a reactor and a separator. Such apparatuses, or portions thereof, generally have dimensions ranging from about 1 micrometer to about 100 micrometers. To implement synthetic processes, disclosed embodiments of the apparatus generally include at least one valve, and often plural, selectively actuatable valves. Detectors, including optical detectors, also can be used to detect product and other materials as they flow by, or are otherwise presented to, the detector. Individual apparatuses may be coupled both in series and in parallel to form a system for making chemical compounds. The apparatus is particularly useful for making compounds requiring iterative reaction schemes, and further can be used to make compounds having morphological structures that resemble the morphology of the apparatus itself, such as dendrimers.

Abstract: A catalytic reactor or heat exchanger includes a monolith defining a plurality of leaves, the monolith having a generally annular cross-section. The monolith is disposed within a generally cylindrical outer tube, and around a corrugated inner tube. The reactor includes a device for urging the monolith radially outward, so as to maintain contact between the monolith and the outer tube. Such device may include a coned washer, or it may be defined by a folded flap that is integral with the inner tube. In either case, the reactor compensates for metal creep, and virtually insures continued contact between the monolith and the outer tube.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a fine structure capable of accurately controlling formation positions of tubular structures made of carbon or the like is provided. Column-shaped protrusions (11) are formed on a substrate (10). Next, a catalyst material (20) such as iron (Fe) is adhered to the substrate (10). Subsequently, by providing the substrate (10) with heat treatment, the catalyst material (20) is melted and agglomerated on the side faces (11A) of the protrusions (11), and thereby cyclic catalyst patterns made of the catalyst material (20) are formed on the side faces (11A) of the protrusions (11). After that, tubular structures (30) in a state of tube are grown by using the catalyst patterns. The tubular structures (30) become carbon (nano) pipes, which are raised from the side faces (11A) of the protrusions (11) and whose ends (30A) are opened. The tubular structures (30) can be formed correspondingly to the positions of the protrusions (11) accurately.

  • Patent number: 7169459
Abstract: A collapsible cellular insulation panel for use with mobile shelters is provided. The panel comprises first and second outer sheets with a plurality of intermediate thin flexible membranes. The membranes are secured along first and second edges to inner surfaces of the outer sheets. The membranes are attached to adjacent membranes along strips that are parallel to and intermediate the first and second membrane edges. The interconnected membranes form cells that trap insulating air and break up convective currents between the outer sheets. Supported from underneath on a horizontal surface, the membranes lay substantially flat, such that a thickness of the panel substantially equals the sum of the thicknesses of the membranes and outer sheets. The panel is thus well adapted for use with mobile shelters, because it occupies little volume in the collapsed state.

  • Patent number: 7122237
Abstract: A honeycomb filter includes a honeycomb-shaped filter base having a plurality of through holes and a sealing member fixed on end surfaces of the filter base in which the through holes are open. The through holes of the filter base are clogged with the sealing member in a checker flag form on each end surface so as to clog the through holes differently from the through holes sealed on the opposite end surface. The sealing member is a sheet-shaped fired body with a thickness of 3 mm or less, and a difference in coefficient of thermal expansion at temperatures of 40 to 800° C. between said sealing member and said filter base is 0.5×10?6/° C. or less. This honeycomb filter has high filtration efficiency, and very high thermal shock resistance and has high bonding strength between the sealing member and the filter base and a low pressure loss.

Abstract: A seal has a non-woven fabric folded along lines transverse to the opposite side of the seal and secured by adhesive to fabric strips. The non-woven fabric forms elongated cells with a plurality of the cells receiving inserts to increase seal stiffness. By securing one of these strips to a stationary component of the sealing surfaces, the opposite strip may expand or collapse relative to a movable sealing surface to accommodate excursions of that surface. Multiple layers of cells may be provided in the seals. The inserts may have various cross-sectional configurations including circular, triangular or rhombic and formed of tubes, solid rods or coiled springs.
