    Abstract: A laminate and a method for making a laminate having a hidden or shielded image. The laminate includes a substrate having an first surface containing an image thereon and a polymeric film laminated to the first substrate surface overlying the image. The film contains an exposed water activatable opaque layer having a thickness ranging from about 0.60 mil to about 2.0 mil, the opaque layer including aluminum silicate and a binder. Upon wetting the opaque layer, the hidden or shielded image is revealed. The method includes a means for producing the laminate in high volumes for minimizing the production costs thereof. Upon drying the opaque layer, the image is again hidden or shielded from view. The laminate may be used multiple times without adversely affecting its ability to reveal and hide images.

A metal mordant dye first co-reactant and a mordant dye second co-reactant form an organic solvent-insoluble colored reaction product when the paper is washed with an organic solvent. The metal mordant dye first co-reactant and a mordant dye second co-reactant are chemically isolated from each other so as to prevent the coordinate covalent bond from forming until the paper is washed with an organic solvent. The chemical isolation can be effected by encapsulation or other physical separation of the co-reactants. The organic solvent-insoluble colored reaction product, once formed, remains entrapped in the web when the paper is washed with an organic solvent. The chemical isolation prevents the organic solvent-insoluble colored reaction product from forming upon the application of pressure alone to the paper.

The non-reflective material may comprise eye black, applied using a stencil, or it may comprise a temporary tattoo or decal, applied in the conventional manner. The shape preferably is a sports apparel or equipment manufacturer's or distributor's logo and/or letters, or a team name, mascot or logo.

Then, the base film (4a) is peeled off the thermal transfer foil (4), and then heat-pressed using a mold (21). Fine relief-and-indentation patterns are provided on the pressing surface (22) of the mold (21), which are transferred to the protective coloring layer (4c), the reflection layer (4d), and the thermoplastic resin layer (4e).

    Abstract: Paperboard having a water-repellant coating which includes a polymer matrix/wax/pigment mixture and is applied to the paperboard as an aqueous formulation. The polymer matrix includes polymer chains which are ionically cross-linked through pendant carboxylic acid groups to provide, together with the wax and pigment components, a substantially continuous, water-repellant film which more readily breaks down under the alkaline conditions of repulping. The coated board also exhibits low slip and resistance to blocking, and is particularly well-suited in corrugated box constructions used in shipping containers for perishable food items such as meats, poultry, fishery products, fruits and vegetables. The pigmented or unpigmented coating formulations are also used as an overcoat over preprinted paperboard surfaces to simultaneously provide scuff and water resistance.

    Abstract: A pressure and heat-sensitive composition comprising chromogen-containing pressure-rupturable microcapsules and heat-sensitive color developer useful for verification of document authenticity system when applied as a localized coating on documents, such as checks and prescriptions. Quickly striking the chromogenic composition with a fingernail or blunt object to generate pressure and heat in the coating produces a colored image by friction. The chromogenic composition possesses a fugitive characteristic, whereby the colored image gradually disappears and can be made to reappear when the chromogenic coating is again subjected to external pressure and heat. This feature can be used for repeated verification of the authenticity of the document.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a novel approach to forming a RIE etch barrier in processes where thermally stable polymeric materials containing free carboxyl groups, such as polyamic acid polymers, are present as masking layers in the electrical device to be fabricated. The present process takes advantage of the discovery that polyamic acids complex with certain metallic cations under slightly acidic conditions to form polyamic acid salts. These salts can be made to further react with a variety of etching gases to form a non-volatile salt or oxide which imparts etch barrier properties to that portion of the polyamic acid layer exposed to the metallic cations.
