Abstract: A skateboard deck is formed of several layers pressed and bonded together. Apertures are formed through the bottom-most layers, and impact support members are arranged within the apertures. The impact support members are more rigid than the other portions of the skateboard deck, and provide localized impact support while allowing the remaining layers of the deck to retain their performance characteristics and feel while strengthening the most vulnerable areas of the deck.

Abstract: A multi-layer polyolefinic film for the unitization of goods is described. The multi-layer film has a multi-layer structure comprising various polyolefinic compositions, the polyolefinic layers having microcrystalline orientation providing the multi-layer film the ability to shrink in response to heat. The heat shrinkable multi-layer film may be placed over a good or a collection of loosely assembled goods and subjected to heat so that the film shrinks causing the good to be contained by the multi-layer film. The multi-layer film has sufficient clarity so that the good or goods can be visually seen through the film. The heat shrinkable polyolefinic multi-layer films are useful for applications where the loosely assembled goods require containment, but where it is also beneficial for the identity of the goods to not be obscured.

  • Patent number: 7910193
Abstract: Negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) or auxetic structures, including three-dimensional auxetic structures, are disclosed and applied to various applications. One such structure comprises a pyramid-shaped unit cell having four base points A, B, C, and D defining the corners of a square lying in a horizontal plane. Four stuffers of equal length or different lengths extend from a respective one of the base points to a point E spaced apart from the plane. Four tendons of equal length or different lengths, but less than that of the stuffers, extend from a respective one of the base points to a point F between point E and the plane. In three-dimensional configurations, a plurality of unit cells are arranged as tiles in the same horizontal plane with the base points of each cell connected to the base points of adjoining cells, thereby forming a horizontal layer.

  • Publication number: 20110059291
Abstract: The invention described herein relates to structured porous materials, where the porous structure provides a tailored Poisson's ratio behavior. In particular, the structures of this invention are tailored to provide a range in Poisson's ratio ranging from a negative Poisson's ratio to a zero Poisson's. Two exemplar structures, each consisting of a pattern of elliptical or elliptical-like voids in an elastomeric sheet, are presented. The Poisson's ratios are imparted to the substrate via the mechanics of the deformation of the voids (stretching, opening, and closing) and the mechanics of the material (rotation, translation, bending, and stretching). The geometry of the voids and the remaining substrate are not limited to those presented in the models and experiments of the exemplars, but can vary over a wide range of sizes and shapes. The invention applies to both two-dimensional structured materials as well as three dimensionally structured materials.

Abstract: An absorbent article having a liner adapted for contiguous relationship with the wearer's body, an outer cover in generally opposed relationship with the liner, and an absorbent body disposed between the liner and the outer cover. An absorbent structure of the absorbent body has a length, a thickness, a width, a longitudinal axis and a non-uniform lateral compression stiffness across its width. The non-uniform lateral compression stiffness is such that the absorbent structure assumes a pre-determined, or non-random buckled configuration under lateral compression thereof. In one embodiment, the buckled configuration is generally symmetric about a plane normal to the absorbent structure and in which the longitudinal axis of the absorbent structure lies.
