    Abstract: A process for forming an etch mask having a discontinuous regular pattern utilizes beads, each of which has a substantially unetchable core covered by a removable spacer coating. Beads which have a core and a spacer coating are dispensed as a hexagonally-packed monolayer onto a thermo-adhesive layer, which is on a target layer. The beads are kept in place by a bead confinement wall. Following a vibrational step which facilitates hexagonal packing of the beads, the resultant assembly is heated so that the beads adhere to the adhesive layer. Excess beads are then discarded. Spacer shell material is then removed from each of the beads, leaving core etch masks. The core-masked target layer is then plasma etched to form a column of target material directly beneath each core. The cores and any spacer material underneath the cores are removed. The resulting circular island of target material may be used as an etch mask during wet isotropic etching of an underlying layer.

In one embodiment of the invention, road 12 is a road provided with a dewaterable pavement and rain water passes through surface layer 18 during raining, flows over and along base layer 16 and is discharged. In surface layer 18, numerous aggregates of small particle sizes 1802 are projected from the entire surface of concrete layer 1804. Titanium dioxide layer 20 is formed by injecting or spraying a mixture comprising titanium dioxide, cement, a filler and water onto the entire surface of surface layer 18 thinly and is water-permeable.

    Abstract: We make particulates, especially magnetic Fe—Co alloys having high magnetic permeability, of controlled dimensions, especially those having a narrow thickness size distribution centered around a median or target thickness in the range of about 0.1-1.0 &mgr;m, using electrodeposition typically on a smooth (polished) titanium cathode. Our preferred continuous process uses a rotating drum cathode inside a fixed anode to grow flakes and to produce them automatically by inherent instability in the deposited film. The drum preferably rotates about a substantially vertical axis. The particulates shed (slough off) into the electrolyte (because of mismatch between the cathode surface and the plated metal or alloy at the molecular level) where they are separated in a magnetic separator or other suitable device. If the flakes are soft iron or iron-cobalt alloys, the drum generally is titanium or titanium alloy.

The polyester film of the present invention has superior heat resistance and is capable of stably covering the surface of a metal plate even after a heat treatment during a can forming process and the like.

    Abstract: In accordance with the invention, a piezoelectrically actuated relay that switches and latches by means of a solid slug and liquid metal is disclosed. The relay operates by means of a longitudinal displacement of a piezoelectric element in extension mode displacing a liquid metal drop and causing it to wet between at least one contact pad on the piezoelectric element or substrate and at least one other fixed pad to close the switch contact. This motion of the piezoelectric element is rapid and causes the imparted momentum of the solid slug and liquid metal drop to overcome the surface tension forces that would hold the bulk of the liquid metal drop in contact with the contact pad or pads near the actuating piezoelectric element.     Abstract: The magnetic and magnetotransport properties of field-aligned single domain half-metallic CrO2 powders have been studied. Needle-shaped nanoparticles of CrO2 have been aligned in a strong magnetic field. The aligned powder sample shows a strong anisotropy along the alignment direction. The conduction mechanism of the aligned CrO2 powder sample has been examined and is consistent with the intergranular spin dependent tunneling. Negative tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) of about 41% is achieved in a small field in the vicinity of the coercive field at 5 K. The magnetoresistance (MR) versus field curve shows two well-separated narrow peaks at the coercive fields and resembles that of a magnetic tunnel junction. This junction-like MR results from the narrow switching field distribution of the aligned powders. The results suggest that the aligned magnetic CrO2 particles may find novel applications in spin transport structures and devices.
