Abstract: A surface treatment for a protective plastic film and/or laminate is disclosed. Suitably, the surface treatment includes coating a major surface of the plastic film or laminate with a curable coating formulation wherein one or more of the coating ingredients are diffused or migrated at least partially into the plastic film or plastic laminate. The migration of coating ingredients creates a gradual transition layer from the plastic film to the coating layer and leads to unique properties. Optionally, the surface treated plastic film is laminated to a release liner coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) to form the aforementioned laminate.

Abstract: Metal-coated polymer articles containing structural substantially porosity-free, fine-grained and/or amorphous metallic coatings/layers optionally containing solid particulates dispersed therein on polymer substrates, are disclosed. The substantially porosity-free metallic coatings/layers/patches are applied to polymer or polymer composite substrates to provide, enhance or restore vacuum/pressure integrity and fluid sealing functions. Due to the excellent adhesion between the metallic coating and the polymer article satisfactory thermal cycling performance is achieved. The invention can also be employed as a repair/refurbishment technique. The fine-grained and/or amorphous metallic coatings are particularly suited for strong and lightweight articles, precision molds, sporting goods, aerospace and automotive parts and other components exposed to thermal cycling and stress created by erosion and impact damage.

Abstract: A sodium/zinc mixed ionomer comprises carboxylate groups and a combination of counterions that consists essentially of sodium cations and zinc cations. The sodium/zinc mixed ionomer is the neutralization product of a precursor acid copolymer. The precursor acid copolymer comprises copolymerized units of an ?-olefin and an ?,?-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, and it has a melt flow rate of about 10 to about 4000 g/10 min. In addition, the precursor acid copolymer, when neutralized to a level of about 40% to about 90%, and when comprising counterions that consist essentially of sodium ions, produces a sodium ionomer that has a freeze enthalpy that is not detectable or that is less than about 3.0 j/g, when determined by differential scanning calorimetry. Further provided are articles comprising or prepared from the sodium/zinc mixed ionomer.

Abstract: A hydrogel-metal assembly is provided. An intervening polymer network is used to bond together a water-swollen hydrogel layer and a biocompatible surface-modified metallic layer. The hydrogel layer is a water-swollen hydrogel layer of at least two interpenetrating polymers. The surface of the biocompatible surface-modified metallic layer is surface-modified with an inorganic material. The intervening polymer network has been chemically grafted to the inorganic material of the biocompatible surface-modified metallic layer through bi-functional linker molecules. The intervening polymer network is further physically or chemically cross-linked with the polymers of the water-swollen hydrogel. The hydrogel-metal assembly can be adapted to form a medical device, medical implant, an artificial implant, an orthopedic implant, or at least as part of a joint.

Abstract: A method for depositing sol-gel derived coatings on substrates to form coated substrates includes the steps of providing a first solution including at least one sol precursor and at least one solvent. A water comprising solution is added to the first solution to form a sol-gel. The sol-gel is deposited on a substrate. The sol-gel layer on the substrate is dried/cured at a temperature ?100° C. for at least 10 minutes to form a solid layer, wherein the solid layer has a thickness from 50 nm to 110 nm. The depositing and curing steps are repeated at least once until combined thickness of the solid layers forms a coating of a predetermined thickness. The resulting solid layers are low water content layers that can be evidenced by transmission measurements. The coated substrate can be an IR transmissive substrate having a recrystallization temperature <130° C.
