  • Patent number: 11747700
Abstract: The invention relates generally to optically high transparency and adjustable haze, superomniphobic, rigid and flexible structures and, more particularly, to fused silica glass and flexible plastic, e.g., polymer, structures having a sub-wavelength texture formed on a surface thereof, which is effective to impart the optical properties of high transparency and adjustable haze to the structures. The texture is reentrant. Additionally, the optically high transparency and adjustable haze structures include a silicon dioxide coating applied to the texture and a treatment of a low surface energy material deposited on the silicon dioxide coating. The silicon dioxide coating renders the structures super hydrophilic, and the low surface energy material treatment renders the structures superomniphobic.

Abstract: A loose fill packing media that can be used to protect packed items from heat and flame or to contain combustion and heat generated by a packed item comprises a plurality of foam cores formed from a cured thermoset resin coated with a layer of an intumescent material. The foam may be formed by mixing a thermoset resin with micro-balloons and a heat absorbing phase change material, adding a catalyst and shaping the mixture into pellets, curing the shaped pellets and then coating the pellets with the intumescent material. The pellets flow freely at room temperature to facilitate pouring into a box around a package to be protected. If the temperature becomes sufficiently elevated, the intumescent material foams and then chars holding the pellets together. The layer of pellets significantly impedes heat transfer to or from the package surrounded by the pellets.

Abstract: Synthesis of gold microtubes and nanotubes suspendable in solution is presented. The synthesis is accomplished using an AAO template route, wherein a polymer tube is used as a sacrificial core. The synthesis produces hollow structures that consist of only gold. These nanostructures exhibit two SPR modes, which correspond to both the transverse and longitudinal modes. The mode assignment was confirmed by measuring SPR behavior as both aligned arrays and in solution. The performance of gold nanotubes as refractive index detectors was quantified and determined to be more sensitive than analogous solid nanorods prepared under identical conditions, and are among the most sensitive nanostructured plasmon sensors to date. Due to their intense and sensitive resonances in the NIR spectrum, these solution-suspendable nanoparticles have potential to be used as in vitro or in vivo sensors.

Abstract: A hydrophilic expanded fluoropolymer membrane having a coating comprising a copolymer comprising a non-wetting monomer and a fluoromonomer is described. In one embodiment, the non-wetting monomer and fluoromonomer are cross linked. A process of vaporizing, condensing and curing a formulation or formulations comprising the non-wetting monomer and/or the fluoromonomer is described. In one embodiment the condensed formulation is exposed to a high energy source such as a UV lamp for example to cross link the non-wetting monomer with the fluoromonomer. The coating may be conformable coating and may provide a hydrophilic membrane that has high water flow rates.

Abstract: According to some embodiments, a cable protection system to at least partially shield a cable from heat, fire, an impact or other potentially harmful event or occurrence comprises a first encompassing member configured for placement around the cable or cable bundle, wherein a first void is defined between the first encompassing member and an outside of the cable or cable bundle. The system additionally includes a second encompassing member positioned around the first encompassing member, wherein a second void is defined between the first encompassing member and the second encompassing member. Further, the system comprises one or more fill materials positioned within the second void. In some embodiments, the fill material comprises vermiculite, ceramic and/or one or more other materials. The first void permits the cable protection system to be slidably moved relative to the cable or cable bundle.

Abstract: The object of the present invention is carbon nanofibers mainly characterized by their high specific volume of mesopores, their high gas adsorption capacity and presenting a graphitic hollow structure. A second object of this invention is a procedure for obtaining such carbon nanofibers, which makes use of a metallic nickel catalyst and specific process furnace parameters that combined with the chemical composition of the furnace atmosphere and the fluidodynamic conditions of the gas stream inside the furnace, result in a faster growth of the carbon nanofibers and also in a higher quality of the carbon nanofibers obtained.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a structural object coated with a superhydrophobic nanostructure composite, the structural object being obtained by densely coating a surface of a solid substrate having a desired shape with a nanostructure obtained by combining a polymer having a polyethyleneimine skeleton with silica on the nanometer order, and bonding a hydrophobic group to the surface of the nanostructure, and a process for producing the structural object. The present invention also relates to a structural object coated with a superhydrophobic nanostructure composite, the structural object being obtained by removing the polymer having the polyethyleneimine skeleton from the nanostructure and bonding a hydrophobic group to the surface of the residual nanostructure containing silica as a main constituent component, and a process for producing the structural object. Furthermore, the present invention provides a method of using the structural object as a container for transferring an aqueous solution.

Abstract: The aim of the invention is to improve a generally known method for producing quartz glass doped with fluorine, wherein SiO2 particles are formed in the presence of fluorine by means of a plasma deposition process, deposited in layers on an outer envelope of a cylindrical quartz glass substrate body rotating about its longitudinal axis, and vitrified to form a layer of quartz glass with a fluorine content of at least 1.5 wt. %, in such a way that a quartz glass semifinished product with a high fluorine content, characterised by a high basic transmission in the UV wavelength range, is obtained. To this end, the substrate body has at least one reservoir layer of quartz glass at least in the region of the outer envelope thereof, having a minimum hydroxyl group content of 200 wt. ppm and/or a minimum hydrogen content of 1×1017 molecules/cm3, and the substrate body is either fully or partially removed following the deposition of the quartz glass layer doped with fluorine.
