  • Patent number: 8973687
Abstract: Cutting elements include a substrate, a polycrystalline table, and an asymmetric interface feature. The interface feature includes a shape that is reflectively asymmetric about at least two planes defined by x, y, and z axes of a Cartesian coordinate system defined to align a z axis of the coordinate system with the central axis of the substrate and to locate a center of the coordinate system at a midpoint along an axial height of the asymmetric interface feature. Methods of forming a cutting element involve: forming an asymmetric interface feature at an end of a substrate; distributing a plurality of superhard particles on the substrate over the asymmetric interface feature in a mold; and bonding the superhard particles in the mold to form a polycrystalline table attached to the substrate.

  • Patent number: 6730373
Abstract: An index-matching coating is applied directly to a low-emissivity (“lowE”) thin-film coating. Nodules growing from a site in the lowE coating are removed to avoid propagation of defects through the layers of the index-matching coating. A tempering step in an oxygen-containing atmosphere produces compressive stress in the lowE coating and hardens the coating. The compressive stress facilitates removal of the nodules and the hardening allows mechanical cleaning of the lowE coating prior to the index-matching coating, further removing nodules. Magnesium-fluoride is used as the final layer of the index-matching coating in one embodiment to improve abrasion resistance. The resulting glass panel may be used as a display panel in a plasma display or an organic light-emitting diode display, for example.

  • Patent number: 5330602
Abstract: In manufacture of a glass architectural panel (FIG. 1) an aluminium foil is bonded to a glass sheet via a layer of thermosetting polyester powder-coating material. The powder is deposited on the foil as the foil unrolls and is melted to provide a fused layer which is then cooled to solidify the layer and arrest progress of curing. The solidified layer is sprayed with a silane adhesion promoter, before being heated momentarily to enable the foil with its adhering and solidified, but uncured, layer, to be rolled up for storage. The rolled foil is transferred nearer to a float-glass production line, where, after being heated to allow it to be unrolled, it is fed onto a hot glass sheet emerging from the line. The fused layer melts as it is brought down with the backing foil to contact the glass sheet and fulfil the cure of the powder material so as to establish the bond. Instead of a single foil, several may be provided overlapping one another (FIG. 3).

Abstract: This invention relates to multiple glass/plastic laminates for ballistic resistant and security applications. The laminates typically comprise a glass lite and a plastic sheet, such as polycarbonate, bonded with an adhesive based on a novel solvent free thermosetting alkyd resin. Subsequent layers can be polycarbonate sheets and/or acrylic sheets and glass lites with the adhesive layer separating the lites and sheets. The resin developed specifically for this application is an unsaturated polyester designed to be highly flexible, tough, low exotherm and compatible with t-butyl styrene. This monomer is unique in that it does not etch acrylic or polycarbonate sheets.Further, this invention relates to a vertical liquid pour process which enables the rapid manufacture of bullet resistant glass/plastic laminates without the need for expensive ultra-violet or heat curing ovens. The adhesive cures at temperatures ranging from 60.degree. F. to 90.degree. F.
