  • Patent number: 8535441
Abstract: A lid for a crystal growth chamber crucible is constructed by forming arcuate sector-shaped portions and coupling them in abutting relationship, for example by welding, to form an annular profile fabricated lid. The arcuate sector-shaped portions may be formed and removed from a lid fabrication blank with less waste than when unitary annular lids are formed and removed from a similarly sized fabrication blank. For example, the sector-shaped portions may be arrayed in an undulating pattern on the fabrication sheet.

Abstract: A lightweight structure at least sectionally composed of a plurality of connected mosaic elements and/or skin mosaic elements. The lightweight structure allows an essentially load-appropriate arrangement of the mosaic elements and/or the skin mosaic elements including the optional skin. The lightweight structure requires a significantly reduced number of connecting elements, such that the assembly effort can be reduced and an additional weight reduction can be achieved. Also, two variations of a method for manufacturing a lightweight structure are provided. Large-format lightweight structures such as, for example, an aircraft fuselage cell or partial shells thereof can also be manufactured in a reliable and dimensionally accurate fashion because only mosaic elements and skin mosaic elements, with relatively small dimensions, need to be handled.

  • Publication number: 20120197056
Abstract: Surface-active solid-phase catalyst activity may be substantially improved by creating deliberate repetitive surface-to-surface contact between portions of the active surfaces of catalyst objects. While they are immersed in reactant material such contact between portions of the active surfaces of catalyst objects can substantially activate the surfaces of many heterogeneous catalysts. Examples are given of such action employing a multitude of predetermined shapes, supported catalyst structures, etc. agitated or otherwise brought into contact to produce numerous surface collisions. One embodiment employs a gear pump mechanism with catalytically active-surfaced gear teeth to create the repetitive transient contacting action during pumping of a flow of reactant. The invention is applicable to many other forms for creating transient catalytic surface contacting action. Optionally catalytic output of such systems may be significantly further improved by employing radiant energy or vibration.

The planar structural element is preferably used as the core or core layer in sandwich composites, for example in rotor vanes of wind power plants.

Abstract: A wire-grid metal sheet includes a grid portion defined by a plurality of spaced strip-shaped longitudinal members extending longitudinally and cross members extending substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal members. A wire grid is made by attaching the wire-grid metal sheet to a frame. The cross members are arranged at intervals at least about five times greater than those of the longitudinal members. The longitudinal members and the cross members may define a lattice pattern. Alternatively, the longitudinal members or the cross members may be arranged in a staggered manner.

Abstract: A multi-panel stretched canvas for artists which is capable of being selectively converted from a 2-dimensional configuration suitable for mounting on a vertical surface such as a wall, for instance, to a plurality of 3-dimensional configurations suitable for mounting on a vertical surface as a bas relief-like wall hanging or resting on a horizontal surface such as a table, for instance. The apparatus in its simplest sense is comprised of three panels of stretched canvas, each in the shape of an equilateral triangle, arranged in a specific configuration and joined together in series by pivotable connection means, preferably hinges. In 2-D form, the panels together form a trapezoid which may be wall mounted in the traditional fashion. By rotating the two end panels a distance behind the center panel the apparatus forms a 3-D bas relief like structure which when mounted to a vertical surface has three sides of the trapezoid in contact with the vertical surface.
