  • Patent number: 11760053
Abstract: A prepreg which is suitable for producing a fiber-reinforced composite material in a short period of time without using an autoclave, can produce a fiber-reinforced composite material in which the occurrence of voids is suppressed and excellent impact resistance is achieved, and has excellent handling properties; and a fiber-reinforced composite material using the prepreg. This prepreg is a prepreg in which a reinforcing fiber [A] arranged in layers is partially impregnated with an epoxy resin composition containing an epoxy resin [B] and a curing agent [C], wherein the impregnation rate ? is 30-95%, and a thermoplastic resin [D] insoluble in the epoxy resin [B] is unevenly distributed on both surfaces of the prepreg. In addition, in the layers of the reinforcing fiber [A], epoxy resin composition-unimpregnated portions are localized on one surface of the prepreg, and the localization parameter a, which defines the degree of localization, is in the range of 0.10<?<0.45.

Abstract: Fibrous sheets are coated or impregnated with a biodegradable composition to render the sheets more resistant to penetration by liquids. Biodegradable polymer blends suitable for use in coating or impregnating a fibrous sheet can be manufactured from at least one type of polyhydroxybutyrate, optionally in combination with at least one additional biodegradable polymer (e.g., a “hard” biodegradable polymer having a glass transition temperature of at least about 10° C. and/or a “soft” biodegradable polymer having a glass transition temperature less than about 0° C. Sufficient inorganic filler may be included so as to render the treated sheet microwaveable. The biodegradable polymer compositions are especially well-suited for coating or impregnating paper sheets, e.g., 12-15 lb/3000 ft2 tissue paper to yield food wraps. Food wraps will typically be manufactured to have good “dead-fold” properties so as to remain in a wrapped position and not spring back to an “unwrapped” form.

  • Patent number: 7276294
Abstract: A paperboard laminate useful for making gable top juice cartons is provided. The laminate provides for a high melting point polymer such as a semi-crystalline nylon to be applied directly to a board surface as an oxygen barrier layer. An anti-scalping layer is also provided by a polar polymer which is connected by a tie layer to an outermost skin coat layer. Positioned between the skin coat layer and the oxygen barrier layer are one or more bulk layers of polyolefins. The resulting laminate affords a juice carton which has good oxygen barrier and Vitamin C retention properties, is resistant to overactivation during heat sealing, has minimal scalping of d-limonene and essential oils, and has excellent bulge resistance.

  • Patent number: 7112259
Abstract: Provided is a paper structure comprised of two outside layers and at least one inside layer. The two outside layers are comprised of substantially cellulosic pulp fiber, and the inside layer is comprised of a high temperature fiber and a polymeric binder, and preferably cellulosic pulp fiber. In a preferred embodiment, the structure comprises at least three inside layers, all comprised of cellulosic pulp fiber, high temperature fiber and a polymeric binder. The resulting paper structure finds particular use as a high temperature transformer paper in the manufacture of transformers.

  • Patent number: RE40857
Abstract: A recording medium particularly suitable for electrophotographic copying is characterized by coated paper that for a given basis weight has proportionally less coating and proportionally more fiber than conventional coated paper made for electrophotographic processes. The base sheet of the coated paper is preferably formed square on a paper machine wet end and has on the order of 40-50% less filler than conventional sheet paper made for electrophotographic processes. After being formed and dried, the base sheet is provided with a top coat weight that is approximately 60% less than the typical coat weight used for conventional paper. The coating is formulated to have sufficient viscosity to stay more on the surface of the base sheet. The coated sheet is calendered to a medium gloss on the order of a 75° TAPPI gloss of about 45, both to preserve a degree of surface roughness to enhance runnability of the paper through an electrophotographic copier and to provide a pleasant and easily readable surface.
