Patent number: 7172814Abstract: Fibrous sheets are coated or impregnated with a biodegradable composition to render the sheets more resistant to penetration by liquids. Biodegradable polymer blends suitable for use in coating or impregnating a fibrous sheet can be manufactured from at least one “hard” biodegradable polymer and at least one “soft” biodegradable polymer. “Hard” biopolymers typically have a glass transition temperature of at least about 10° C. “Soft” biodegradable polymers typically have a glass transition temperature less than about 0° C. Another useful biodegradable polymer composition includes one or more biodegradable polymers and sufficient inorganic filler so as to render the treated sheet microwaveable. The biodegradable polymer compositions are especially well-suited for coating or impregnating paper sheets, e.g., 12–15 lb/3000 ft2 tissue paper to yield food wraps.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2003Date of Patent: February 6, 2007Assignee: Bio-Tec Biologische Naturverpackungen GmbH & CoInventor: Simon K. Patent number: 7112259Abstract: Provided is a paper structure comprised of two outside layers and at least one inside layer. The two outside layers are comprised of substantially cellulosic pulp fiber, and the inside layer is comprised of a high temperature fiber and a polymeric binder, and preferably cellulosic pulp fiber. In a preferred embodiment, the structure comprises at least three inside layers, all comprised of cellulosic pulp fiber, high temperature fiber and a polymeric binder. The resulting paper structure finds particular use as a high temperature transformer paper in the manufacture of transformers.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 2003Date of Patent: September 26, 2006Assignee: FiberMark, Inc.Inventor: Tyrone Cornbower

Patent number: 6902769Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for process for preparing a coating by a) applying to a porous and/or absorbent substrate a liquid coating composition containing at least one component having (meth)acryloyl groups and a dynamic viscosity of less than 2000 mPa.s and 0.1 to 10 wt. %, based on the non-volatile content of the coating composition, of an additive selected from polyamides, oligomeric fatty acid amides and polymeric fatty acid amides and b) polymerizing the composition with radiation. The present invention also relates to the resulting coated substrates and to the coating compositions used in the process.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 2003Date of Patent: June 7, 2005Assignee: Bayer AktiengesellschaftInventors: Jan Weikard, Wolfgang Fischer, Manfred Müller

Patent number: RE40857Abstract: A recording medium particularly suitable for electrophotographic copying is characterized by coated paper that for a given basis weight has proportionally less coating and proportionally more fiber than conventional coated paper made for electrophotographic processes. The base sheet of the coated paper is preferably formed square on a paper machine wet end and has on the order of 40-50% less filler than conventional sheet paper made for electrophotographic processes. After being formed and dried, the base sheet is provided with a top coat weight that is approximately 60% less than the typical coat weight used for conventional paper. The coating is formulated to have sufficient viscosity to stay more on the surface of the base sheet. The coated sheet is calendered to a medium gloss on the order of a 75° TAPPI gloss of about 45, both to preserve a degree of surface roughness to enhance runnability of the paper through an electrophotographic copier and to provide a pleasant and easily readable surface.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 2004Date of Patent: July 21, 2009Assignee: NewPage Wisconsin System Inc.Inventors: Charles A.
