Abstract: The invention relates to a novel process for commercial production of bulk functionally graded materials (FGM) with a per-determined axial, radial, and spherical gradient profiles. The process is based on the reiterated deformation of the layers of variable cross-section thicknesses made of different materials. That allows significant savings of time, energy and materials. Metals, ceramics, glasses and polymers in different combinations can be brought together with a continuous or stepwise gradual change from one material to another. The invention can be applied to industrial production of functionally graded materials with different types of gradient profiles, which cannot be produced by the existing technologies and which are sought by many key industries. The mechanical, thermal and optical responses of materials produced by the proposed methods are of considerable interest in optics, optoelectronics, tribology, biomechanics, nanotechnology and high temperature technology.

Abstract: A novel type of ultrathin cationic hydrogel coatings are provided that have high, quick and reversible swelling/shrinkage transitions and surface wettability in response to pH changes. The poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (PVP) hydrogel films are produced by selective cross-linking of PVP copolymers in layer-by-layer (LbL) films assembled by spin-assisted method. These multilayer hydrogels exhibit drastic and reversible 10-fold swelling when the pH is changed from neutral to acidic. The swelling amplitude of these coatings is controlled by varying cross-link densities within the films. The pH-responsive hydrogels open new prospects for developing “intelligent” materials with sharp stimuli-triggered responses for applications in sensing, transport regulation, and self-cleaning coatings.

Abstract: The subject of the present invention is a semi-rigid or flexible and low-gloss impact-reinforced acrylic material. The acrylic material according to the invention comprises a nanostructured matrix constituted of at least one thermoplastic acrylic block copolymer and at least one highly crosslinked acrylic copolymer. The matrix comprises at least one thermoplastic acrylic block copolymer. The highly crosslinked acrylic copolymer comprises, as sole monomer or as predominate monomer, MMA, that is to say that it comprises, by weight, more than 50%, advantageously more than 65% of MMA. The acrylic material according to the invention comprises from 60% to 99% by weight of matrix for 40% to 1% by weight of crosslinked copolymer. These materials may be converted by injection molding, extrusion, co-extrusion, extrusion-blow molding for producing parts, profiles, sheets or films for example.

Abstract: The present invention provides an interlayer film for laminated glass which has high heat-shielding properties and a high visible transmittance, and further has excellent light resistance, resulting in long-term retention of the high visible transmittance. The interlayer film for laminated glass of the present invention has a single-layer structure or a laminated structure of two or more layers. The interlayer film for laminated glass is provided with a first layer that contains a thermoplastic resin and tungsten oxide particles. In cases where the interlayer film for laminated glass has a single-layer structure, the first layer further contains an ultraviolet shielding agent.

Abstract: Protective sheet 1 for solar cells comprises a base material 11 and a thermoplastic resin layer 12 laminated on at least one surface of the base material 11. The thermoplastic resin layer 12 comprises a first layer 121 laminated on the base material 11 and a second layer 122 laminated on the first layer 121. The first layer 121 contains as the main component a copolymer of ethylene and at least one type selected from the group consisting of (meth)acrylic acid, (meth)acrylic acid ester, glycidyl (meth)acrylate and vinyl acetate. The second layer 122 contains an olefin-based resin as the main component. The protective sheet 1 for solar cells has excellent adhesiveness between the base material and the thermoplastic resin layer and can suppress the warping caused in a solar cell module.

Abstract: A hydrophilic copolymer is designed and synthesized by copolymerization of an acidic monomer and a second hydrophilic monomer. The copolymer is non-thrombogenic, hydrophilic and incorporates reactive functional groups. The copolymer can then be covalently attached to a primer/base coat through its functional groups, to form a durable lubricious coating on medical devices. A coating formed of the polymer on a surface is non-thrombogenic and non-cytotoxic. The coating shows good stability in gamma ray, e-beam and ethylene oxide sterilization.
