  • Patent number: 4097648
Abstract: A laminated structural member is fabricated with one layer of sheet material such as plywood or fiberboard and an adjacent layer bonded thereto and formed from a mixture of scrap particles of thermoplastic wire and cable insulation, wood particles, comminuted paper, sawdust, and a suitable resin binder. The fabrication procedure is carried out by initially forming a mixture of reclaimed thermoplastic wire or cable insulation, a thermosetting binder, and one or more wood like fillers, such as wood chips, comminuted paper and sawdust and mold release agent. The mixture is then placed in a mold with the sheet material and is subjected to heat and pressure to form a structural member.

  • Patent number: 4076873
Abstract: A resinous product has high resistance to flame spread, good heat release and exhibits a low smoke-developed rating when exposed to flame or to indirect or radiant heat, and is flexible, tough and resistant to cracking and embrittlement upon curing. Such a product is the condensation product of resorcinol with or without included phenol, and an admixture of paraformaldehyde and furfural or furfuryl alcohol or both. The resorcinol starting material of this invention can also suitably be used in the form of a B-stage or partially cured resin of resorcinol-phenol-formaldehyde which is then condensed with the aforesaid aldehydes or such aldehyde substance and furfuryl alcohol. The product is useful in making castings or moldings which are resistant to embrittlement or cracking upon curing, and in making tough fiberglass parts, and it can contain fillers or the like. A method of making the product and articles is provided.

  • Patent number: 4045595
Abstract: Panels are provided with a glossy, tough coating by a method comprising the steps of applying on the panel surface a conventional resin adhesive; spreading thereon vinyl-modified lignocellulosic particles made by polymerization of vinyl monomers on substrate lignocellulosic particles; and subjecting the assembly to heat and pressure. Over a wide range of add-on ratio of vinyl polymer to lignocellulosic particles, coatings can be produced which have neither the solvent sensitivity of the polymer nor the water sensitivity of the cellulose. The novel, esthetically pleasing marbleized appearance is heightened by the use of dyed particles.

  • Patent number: 4003863
Abstract: Intumescent amine-aldehyde copolymer/epoxy resin compositions having improved UV stability are obtained by incorporating about 0.5-75% by weight of a polyol polyacrylate or polyol polymethacrylate into an intumescent composition comprising (A) a low molecular weight, water-insoluble amine-aldehyde copolymer consisting essentially of repeating units which correspond to the formula: wherein Q is the residue of an alkanal containing 1-5 carbon atoms and R is hydrogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, alkoxy, haloalkoxy, halo, nitro, acetamido, or sulfonamido and (B) an epoxy resin. The preferred compositions are those in which the amine-aldehyde copolymer is a sulfanilamide-formaldehyde copolymer, the epoxy resin is a liquid glycidyl ether epoxy resin, and the polyol ester is a liquid ester.

  • Patent number: 3968294
Abstract: A fast cured lignocellulosic particle board comprises a hot consolidated laminar mat of lignocellulosic particles. The mat has a middle lamina of particles coated with a fast setting, acid catalyzed, phenol aldehyde thermosetting resin, while the two surface laminae comprise particles coated with a relatively slow curing, alkali catalyzed phenol aldehyde thermosetting resin. The middle lamina is fast curing, but potentially adherent to the metal cauls of the hot press in which the board is manufactured. Although the surface laminae are slower curing, they are nonadherent to the cauls. The net result is a non-sticking particle board curable in the press in about one-half the press time conventionally required.

  • Patent number: 3947425
Abstract: Described herein are hydrophilic resin products having particular utility in rapid curing adhesives for wood and other materials. Processes for producing these resins and hydrophilic adhesives produced therefrom are also described. The resins are prepared by reacting an aldehyde condensation polymer, such as a phenol-formaldehyde condensation polymer, with a strong mineral acid salt, i.e., a hydrochloric, nitric, or sulfuric acid salt, of m-hydroxy aniline, 2,6-diaminopyridine or 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane. When these resins are blended with an appropriate curing agent, such as an aldehyde, the resulting adhesives cure very rapidly at ambient temperatures. While uncured, these adhesives are hydrophilic and thus water washable, but when cured, they are insoluble in water and common organic solvents.
