Patent number: 9601779Abstract: Alkali (or other active) metal battery and other electrochemical cells incorporating active metal anodes together with aqueous cathode/electrolyte systems. The battery cells have a highly ionically conductive protective membrane adjacent to the alkali metal anode that effectively isolates (de-couples) the alkali metal electrode from solvent, electrolyte processing and/or cathode environments, and at the same time allows ion transport in and out of these environments. Isolation of the anode from other components of a battery cell or other electrochemical cell in this way allows the use of virtually any solvent, electrolyte and/or cathode material in conjunction with the anode. Also, optimization of electrolytes or cathode-side solvent systems may be done without impacting anode stability or performance. In particular, Li/water, Li/air and Li/metal hydride cells, components, configurations and fabrication techniques are provided.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2016Date of Patent: March 21, 2017Assignee: PolyPlus Battery CompanyInventors: Steven J. Patent number: 6238818Abstract: The invention relates to a housing which receives dry cells in an in-line or end to end orientation. The invention includes features which prevent the incorrect orientation by preventing dry cell terminals making contact with the necessary components. In this way, it prevents premature dissipation of dry cells or their impairment. The mechanism by which these features do this is to recess one terminal namely that terminal which would be contacted by the positive terminal of a dry cell. In this way, the negative terminal of a dry cell can never make electrical connection. Another feature of the invention is the provision of an aperture having a profile of a silhouette of a dry cell, which has advantages in low light situations, saves material, and allows for relatively easy extraction of dry cells from the cartridge.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1999Date of Patent: May 29, 2001Assignee: Eveready Battery Company, Inc.Inventor: David R. Patent number: 5882817Abstract: Plastic hydrophobic material is bonded to a metallic sheet member such that the resulting sandwich structure is impervious to electrochemical delamination. First and second films of the plastic hydrophobic material are applied to opposed surfaces of the metallic sheet member and extend beyond a peripheral edge of the metallic sheet member to form contiguous border portions. A plurality of perforations are formed through the metallic sheet member at locations spaced from its peripheral edge. A resulting sandwich structure of the metallic sheet member and the first and second films are compressed and simultaneously the temperature is raised to the sintering temperature of the hydrophobic film material. The first and second films are caused to melt sufficiently at their interfaces to cause an intermixing of the juxtaposed material thereof throughout the region of the border portions and throughout the regions of the perforations.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1997Date of Patent: March 16, 1999Assignee: Space Systems/Loral, Inc.Inventors: John C.
