  • Patent number: 7732091
Abstract: A lithium ion secondary battery in which at least one step portion is formed on an upper surface of a cap plate, and at least one step portion is formed on a lower or first surface of a battery part opposite to the upper or first surface of the cap plate so that the at least two step portions are complementary. The complementary step portions of the cap plate of the bare cell and the battery part provided at an upper part of the cap plate result in easy coupling of the battery part to the bare cell and stable maintenance of the coupling between the battery part and the bare cell. The coupling structure results in greater ease in performing subsequent manufacturing processes and protects the bare cells coupled to the battery part from dislodging.

Abstract: The present subject matter includes a capacitor stack having a plurality of anode layers, and a plurality of cathodic metal substrates partially coated in a titanium coating. Cathode portions lacking titanium enable weld interconnections which are substantially free of titanium, improving capacitor properties. In some embodiments, anodes are interspersed among cathodes, and are electrically separated from the cathodes, with portions of cathode material attached to the welding area of the anode. These portions of the cathode material are no longer electrically connected to the cathode. As the anode and these cathode portions are welded and aged, leakage current is reduced due to improved oxide growth in the welding area due to the absence of titanium.

  • Publication number: 20100055557
Abstract: The present invention provides battery cell having low resistance internal connections and compact, low volume terminal connections in order to maximize power-producing volume. The battery of the present invention may be created using a novel fold geometry to fold electrode tabs into compact, low profile tabs having a low total volume. The battery cell provides a means for equalizing path lengths from each electrode active area to the point of connection to the terminal and also reducing path length, thereby further reducing resistance of the battery. The connection means of the present invention consumes less internal battery space than connection means of prior art electrode stacks. Accordingly, the electrode stack of the present invention disposes more or larger battery cells in the battery than the prior art and thus provides more power than the prior art battery. The present invention is designed to overcome prior art difficulties in preparing a battery.

  • Patent number: 7432001
Abstract: The prevention of lithium clusters from bridging between the negative and positive portions of a cell during discharge is described. This is done by limiting the amount of electrolyte in the cell, thereby eliminating excess electrolyte pooling above the cell stack. It is in this excess electrolyte that a relatively higher Li+ ion concentration can occur, creating an anodically polarized region resulting in the reduction of lithium ions on the negative and positive surfaces as the concentration gradient is relaxed. Typically, a lithium ion concentration gradient sufficient to cause lithium cluster formation is induced by the high rate, intermittent discharge of a lithium/silver vanadium oxide (Li/SVO) cell.
