And Terminal Seal Patents (Class 429/181)
  • Publication number: 20020187393
Abstract: A battery terminal for a battery case is formed with a circumerentially extending shoulder which engages the inner surface of the battery case when the terminal is installed in an aperture in the case by inserting the terminal in the aperture from the inside of the battery case. A retaining ring is then interference resistance welded to the terminal as the retaining ring is pressed into a seated position against the outer surface of the case. An o-ring seal on the shoulder engages the inner surface of the battery case and seals against leakage of the battery acid. High pressure deformation of the battery case and resulting creep are significantly reduced because the force that is used to press the retaining ring against the outer surface of the battery case is relatively low. Furthermore, the welded joint is almost as strong as the material that the terminal is made of and stronger than the plastic battery case.

Abstract: Mechanically and thermally improved rechargeable batteries, modules and fluid-cooled battery pack systems. The battery is prismatic in shape with an optimized thickness to width to height aspect ratio which provides the battery with balanced optimal properties when compared with prismatic batteries lacking this optimized aspect ratio. The optimized thickness, width and height allow for maximum capacity and power output, while eliminating deleterious side affects. The battery case design allows for unidirectional expansion which is readily compensated for by applying external mechanical compression counter to that direction. In the module, the batteries are bound within a module bundling/compression means under external mechanical compression which is optimized to balance outward pressure due to expansion and provide additional inward compression to reduce the distance between the positive and negative electrodes, thereby increasing overall battery power.

  • Publication number: 20020155350
Abstract: It has been discovered that the connection between a current collector and a molybdenum terminal pin can be improved by roughening the terminal pin. However, a roughened terminal pin detracts from the integrity of the glass-to-metal seal. To overcome this, a sleeve or couple surrounds that portion of the roughened terminal pin that will be sealed to the insulating glass. The sleeve or couple is welded at each end to the terminal pin, and a glass-to-metal seal is formed between the sleeved terminal pin, the insulating glass, and the metallic lid. The resulting assembly contains a portion of the terminal pin that has a roughened surface and is suitable for making a high strength connection to a current collector of a primary or secondary lithium ion battery, and to a sleeved portion which has a relatively smooth surface that provides a high strength for a glass-to-metal seal.

Abstract: A lithium-ion secondary cell is provided to remarkably improve a mechanical peel strength of heat fusion-bonding portions of a container as well as to improve a moisture permeability resistance, a sealing performance, a barrier property, a safety or the like of the container. A lead (3) for use with a lithium-ion secondary cell according to the present invention is sandwiched by heat fusion-bonding portions (2) of a container (5) so as to be exposed in the outside of the container (5) when the container (5) is sealed by heat fusion-bonding. The lead (3) is coated with a heat fusion-bonding seal material (1). This heat fusion-bonding seal material (1) has an excellent adhesion to the lead (3) rather than a material of a sealant layer (19). Also, in the lithium-ion secondary cell, an end portion (1a) on the outside portion in the longitudinal direction of the lead (3) in the layer made of the heat fusion-bonding seal material (1) is exposed from the end face of the container (5).

Abstract: A hermetic glass-to-metal seal between a conductive pin and an outer body, wherein a corrosion-resistant noble metal (e.g., gold) coating is applied to the conductive pin before the hermetic seal is formed. The noble metal-coated conductive pin is located in glass having a softening point less than about 650° C. and disposed in a cavity of the outer body. This is accomplished by inserting the coated conductive pin into a bore in a glass preform, heating the assembly to a temperature in excess of the softening point of the glass but less than about 700° C., and cooling the assembly. The coefficients of thermal expansion of the components of the assembly are preferably selected such that the resulting assembly is a hermetic compression seal.

Abstract: A battery with side flanking terminals wherein the positive and negative terminals are fixed onto the opposite side walls of a casing and connect respectively to a positive and negative post. The battery may be sealed by main cover seal with an adhesive to the casing. The positive and negative terminals are connected respectively to the positive and negative posts through first and second slots located in main cover. The advantages provided by this invention is to prevent the possibility of short circuiting the battery caused by a fallen metal object on top of the battery to increase safety of operation. Further, the connection, space for storage and operation is reduced. Further, the battery may be sealed in a one step process.

Abstract: An enclosed storage battery having an excellent closed tightness and reliability is obtained. An annular bump is formed integrally with the upper periphery of the penetration hole of a lead-alloy bushing buried in the top of the lid for covering the jar. The leading end of the pole passing through the penetration hole of the bushing is inserted into the lower part of the annular bump. A recess is formed on the top of the leading end of the pole so as to be easier to melt the upper portion of the pole, and by welding with the inner wall of the penetration hole of the bushing, the annular bump is later melted, and the bushing penetration hole is filled up with the fused lead.
