  • Patent number: 8272158
Abstract: A device that assists in the holding and releasing of a cast net when thrown for fishing is herein disclosed. The device replaces the traditional practice of holding the edge of a casting net in a fisherman's mouth while throwing. The device is made of a section of synthetic cord wherein each end of the cord is attached to the outward leg of a clip mechanism, thus forming a loop configuration. The loop is then placed around the fisherman's neck with the clip mechanism hanging in a downward configuration. The cast net is then prepared to throw but instead of placing the edge of the net in the mouth, it is secured within the jaws of the clip. The net is then cast and as the net travels away from the fisherman, it pulls away from the clip resulting in a perfect cast.

  • Patent number: 7975424
Abstract: One embodiment of a castable fish catching net device operable by one person for capturing aquatic animals from any body of water without the need for the operator to enter the water. Includes a purse type seine supported by a generally triangular frame which is heavier than the surrounding water thus providing a sinking force. A handle is attached to the apex of the triangular frame extending in towards the center of the frame. A casting and retrieval cord is attachable to the most center end of the handle. Buoyant means is provided to orient the fish catching net device in a substantially vertical attitude relative to the surface of the body of water as it descends into the water. The purse shaped net has membranes that generate a buoyant-force as the fish catching net device is dragged through the water thus providing the operator with the ability to control the depth of deployment by varying the speed of forward travel through the water.

  • Patent number: 5042187
Abstract: An apparatus for harvesting floating brine shrimp colonies from open water is disclosed. The apparatus includes a boat fitted with a driven roller arrangement adapted to engage and retrieve a floating boom positioned to enclose the subject shrimp colony. A conveyor belt fitted with a plurality of net-fitted frames is also mounted on the boat and is positioned to receive and filter the shrimp from the water as the roller arrangement tightens the boom enclosure about the shrimp colony and thereby directs that colony into proximity of the conveyor and its net-fitted frames.

  • Patent number: 5020464
Abstract: A brailing system for commercial fishing boats that speeds the process of taking the fish from the pursing net that has been gathered next to the ship and transferring the fish into the storage chambers of the ship. Novel structure for reciprocally, pivotally and rotatably supporting the rear end of the brailing pole reduces the number of men required to dip the brailing pole into the pursing net.

  • Patent number: 4995187
Abstract: A fishing vessel device having open faced pulleys attached to a pivotal plate member of a traveling assembly. The traveling assembly is winched along a slide rail attached perpendicular to a pivotal cross tee support. Another open faced pulley is attached to the cross tee support such that this pulley is in a coplanar relationship with the traveling pulleys. The cross tee support is pivotally attached to a stanchion and the stanchion is mounted adjacent to the vessel gunnel. The buoy attached end of a crab pot hauling line is retained in a fork shaped device such that when the line is also trained about the open faced pulleys a crab pot can be recovered from the water and suspended within the work area of the vessel. Rotation of the pivotal plate member will result in dumping the hauling line from the traveling pulleys. Rotation of the cross tee support will result in the lowering of the overall height of the fishing vessel.

  • Patent number: 4894943
Abstract: A mechanically driven brailer for fish from the bunt of a net includes a handle, a brailer hoop, and brail net attached to the hoop. The brailer hoop is hinged to the handle such that it maintains a coplanar relationship with the handle as both are driven downward into the fish. Release of a latch means allows the hoop to change positions relative to the handle so that the volume of the bunt swept by the hoop is maximized.

  • Patent number: 4736541
Abstract: A trolley assembly for use upon a line which is anchored in the water for retrieving a fishing net. The trolley assembly includes a weighted body member having a pair of trolley arms extending therefrom. The trolley arms are disposed at an angle to one another and are integrally associated with the body member to define a generally V-shaped assembly. The body member includes a loop disposed on a line bisecting the angle between the trolley arms for affixing a net securing line opposite the trolley arms. The trolley assembly also includes a pair of trolley wheels adapted to ride on the anchored line. One of the trolley wheels is mounted for wheel-rolling movement on each of the trolley arms. The trolley wheels are disposed in spaced relation to the body member. With these features of construction, one end of the fishing net can be secured to the trolley assembly with the net securing line and the other end of the fishing net can be controlled by a fishing line secured thereto.

  • Patent number: 4646448
Abstract: An apparatus for dredging bottom dwelling seafood such as oysters is comprised of a collecting basket pivotally carried by a frame, the basket having a pair of parallel arms rigidly fixed thereto. A pair of upright standards are mounted adjacent the edge of a boat, and each standard contains an arm receiving groove which is configured to receive the arms and pivot the basket upwardly about an axis through the arms to empty the contents of the basket. A spring loaded member slows movement of the basket as it pivots for more smoothly emptying the contents. The spring loaded member also stores potential energy for propelling the basket back into the water after it has been emptied.

  • Patent number: 4366639
Abstract: A shaking machine for shaking fish out of drift nets includes a shaking fence at the forward end thereof for receiving a drift net to be shaken, the shaking fence being reciprocally driven so as to shake a drift net received thereon. An upper drum is rotatably mounted in the machine and is located above the shaking fence and a lower drum is rotatably mounted in the machine and is located below the shaking fence. In one embodiment, the upper and lower drums are rotatably driven in different rotational directions to propel a drift net received over the upper drum and under the lower drum through the machine, to the rear end of the machine. In another embodiment, the upper drum is driven and the lower drum is freely rotatable so that nets wound around the upper drum are pulled thereby, and are then passed under the lower drum for laying out on, for example, the deck of a boat.

  • Patent number: 4365575
Abstract: A barge or skiff equipped with a pair of (water tight) 7-shaped hollow arms pivotally attached to the bow sides and operated to free tuna-herding porpoises from a tuna seine enclosure and snatch and scoop up fish, a retrieval net being extended between slidable extensions of the arms. Porpoises can be steered out of the enclosure primarily after lowering any section of the cork-line with weights, cable lifted by chase boats to prevent fish escape. The arms are retracted by coil springs tho pivoted down and extended by hydraulic jacks inside the springs. Giant arms with pivotal forearms can be mounted on stern cutouts or recesses of tuna purse-seiners and operated to handle the cork-line, let out porpoises, bag a catch by buoyancy, scoop up some or most fish and some mammals from a full size enclosure or purse and dump them onto deck, the seine to be pulled in intermittently over the stern between the (held up and/or extended) arms the unshrunken purse having less bends to entangle porpoises.
