  • Patent number: 5252450
Abstract: A photochromic composition for incorporation into a light-transmitting polymer is described. Silver halide crystallites are capped with an organic capping group using multivalent metal ions integrated into the surface of the silver halide crystallite to provide crystallite surface sites that provide a handle between the organic capping group and the silver halide crystallites. The size of the capped silver halide crystallites are less than about 1000 .ANG.. A reverse micelle technique is used to control the size of the silver halide crystallite while integrating the multivalent ions and bonding the organic capping group. The capped crystallites are soluble in organic solvents and, as such, are readily incorporated into a polymer matrix.

  • Patent number: 5246826
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process of preparing a photosensitive silver halide emulsion. In this process, an emulsion comprising an acid substituted organic ripening agent and a dispersing medium is prepared. Silver halide grains are then permitted to grow in the emulsion at a pH of from about 2 to about 4.6 to accelerate the growth of the silver halide grains. Subsequently, the pH of the emulsion is adjusted to a value of about 5.3 to about 7 to repress grain growth, to prevent interference with dye sensitization, and to limit fog formation, particularly during storage of the coated emulsion.
