Burner Having Electrical Heater Or Igniter Patents (Class 431/258)
  • Patent number: 7699602
Abstract: A burner for depositing carbon soot on a glassware mold includes a burner nozzle having an annular array of individual gas outlet ports, a fuel passage within the nozzle connected to a first plurality of the outlet ports and an oxidant passage in the nozzle connected to a second plurality of the outlet ports. The first plurality of outlet ports individually alternate with the second plurality of outlet ports around the annular array such that the array presents alternate fuel and oxidant outlet ports around the array. An ignition electrode is disposed on the burner nozzle within the annular array of outlet ports for igniting fuel and oxidant emerging from the outlet ports. The ignition electrode preferably is in the form of an elongated ignition electrode rod telescopically surrounded by an insulator and centered on the burner nozzle within the annular array of outlet ports, and a ground electrode telescopically surrounding the insulator.

Abstract: The present method and apparatus for producing a supersonic jet stream introduce an oxidizer in such a manner as to create a vortex, which is then restricted. Fuel is introduced into a reduced pressure eye of the vortex, forming a stratified composite stream of gases with unmixed oxidizer surrounding an inner mixture of fuel and oxidizer. This stratified composite stream is passed down a tube that exhausts to a low pressure environment. The combined fuel and oxidizer in the stratified stream is ignited to provide a high-velocity stream of combustion products. The outer layer of unmixed oxidizer in the vortex shields the tube and reduces or eliminates the need for additional cooling.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are presented for producing carbon black on a substrate. One preferred method includes providing a head assembly including a nozzle, the nozzle including a first injector for injecting a gas such as acetylene, and a second injector for injecting a mixture of a fuel and an oxidant to produce a pilot flame. The head assembly is indexed over a substrate on which is to be deposited carbon black. The acetylene is injected through the first injector, then through a pilot flame emitted from one or more second injectors, and finally toward a substrate to be coated with carbon black, but only when a deposit of carbon black is desired. The method includes ceasing the flow of acetylene, indexing the head assembly away from the substrate on which was just deposited the carbon black after a carbon black deposition sequence, and ceasing fuel gas and oxidant gas flows through the second injector.

Abstract: A heater in which, during the glow plug ramp time interval, the amount of energy supplied per unit of time to the glow plug/flame monitor can be successively changed, and a control unit which is operationally coupled to the glow plug/flame monitor. To enable continuous flame monitoring during the starting phase of the heater with the control unit, the resistance value of the glow plug/flame monitor is determined during the glow plug ramp time interval and compared to a threshold value RGS, and when the threshold value RGS is not reached, a flame-out signal is generated.

  • Patent number: 6676402
Abstract: Sequenced pulses of light from an excitation laser with at least two resonator cavities with separate output couplers are directed through a light modulator and a first polarzing analyzer. A portion of the light not rejected by the first polarizing analyzer is transported through a first optical fiber into a first ignitor laser rod in an ignitor laser. Another portion of the light is rejected by the first polarizing analyzer and directed through a halfwave plate into a second polarization analyzer. A first portion of the output of the second polarization analyzer passes through the second polarization analyzer to a second, oscillator, laser rod in the ignitor laser. A second portion of the output of the second polarization analyzer is redirected by the second polarization analyzer to a second optical fiber which delays the beam before the beam is combined with output of the first ignitor laser rod.

Abstract: An ignitor controller and method of providing the same triggers an ignitor switch of a gas appliance, such as a furnace, subsequent to the zero-crossing of the line voltage, but before the voltage exceeds +/−five volts. This effectively reduces EMI levels caused by the constant triggering of AC line voltage to the ignitor switch after +/−five volts, which constant triggering is needed to properly operate ignitors (e.g., silicon nitride ignitors) in electronic ignition systems. The controller includes a voltage detector circuit (i.e., a two transistor circuit), a series switch (i.e., a darlington array) and an energy storage device (i.e., a capacitor), which trigger the ignitor switch (e.g., a triac) sufficiently close to the line voltage zero-crossing to reduce line conducted interference.
