Publication number: 20040091832Abstract: A method and apparatus for combusting a fuel and air mixture within a combustion chamber, particularly a combustion chamber of a gaseous fuel fired water heater. A pressure relief void is intentionally formed so that a combustion chamber forms communication with a surrounding environment through means other than the exhaust flue and/or a fuel and/or air inlet. During ignition, the pressure relief void allows pre-combustion fluid within the combustion chamber to escape through both the pressure relief void and the exhaust flue. The pressure relief void reduces or eliminates undesirable noise associated with start-up and operation of conventional water heater combustion chambers with premixed burner systems. The pressure relief void of this invention is preferably sized large enough to relieve an ignition pressure pulse from the combustion chamber upon ignition and yet is sized small enough to prevent a combustion flame from passing through the pressure relief void during ignition and/or operational combustion.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 31, 2003Publication date: May 13, 2004Inventors: Philip Carbone, Karen Benedek, Judith Reich, Dewi Bramono, Herwig Hcheidler

Patent number: 6688881Abstract: A torch and mounting system therefor has a cylindrical main glass tube surrounded by a tough and rigid tube. The metallic tube is threaded at each end for receiving compression nuts, each having a ferrule such as an O-ring or a tapered ring inside. Each ferrule is a slip fit over the main glass tube and has an angled surface that butts against the end of the metallic tube. When the nuts are tightened, the sloped surfaces of the ferrules force the ferrules against the main glass tube, thereby fixing it in place within the metal tube. The metal tube in turn is clamped by a mounting clamp which is, in turn, mounted to an adjustment stage for optimum positioning of the torch. A support rail has adjustably mounted thereon one or more strain relieving clamps for holding gas or vapor delivery tubes in place to insure proper delivery of gases and vapors to the torch.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 2002Date of Patent: February 10, 2004Assignee: Fitel USA Corp.Inventor: Tadeusz Olewicz

Publication number: 20030219689Abstract: A combustion chamber for a chiller includes a burner and igniter which are maintained in the horizontal position. The horizontal positioning is implemented by a steel casting, which includes a thick flange portion. The thick flange portion is between the combustion chamber and the outside surface, therefore keeping the outside surface cooler. The steel casting has a mitered extension of the combustion chamber, which allows for more efficient heat transfer. By orienting the burner and igniter in the steel casting in the horizontal position, one eliminates prior art ceramic annular cooling devices. The horizontal orientation enables the overall height of the generator to be decreased and also allows for easy access during installation and maintenance of the burner and igniter.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 10, 2003Publication date: November 27, 2003Inventor: Nicholas A.
