  • Patent number: 8177544
Abstract: A control system for a fuel-fired appliance and methods of operating are disclosed. When a failed ignition of a burner is detected, the control system is configured to enter a soft lockout state if the voltage level of a burner of the fuel-fired appliance is low during the failed ignition and a hard lockout state if the voltage level of the burner is not low during the failed ignition. In some cases, if a period of time has elapsed and/or the voltage level of the burner has increased after the control system enters the soft lockout state, the control system may be configured to initiate one or more subsequent ignition trials. In some cases, if the one or more subsequent ignition trials fail, the control system may be configured to then enter the hard lockout state.

Abstract: A cooking fuel ignition assembly for an outdoor cooking apparatus as in a barbeque grill. The ignition assembly includes a tinder support combination of an ash can and tinder support stand. An operator inserts the tinder support stand within the ash can such that its lower spacer structure makes contact with the base of the ash can receptacle and the upper tinder platform is in the upper region of the ash can. The operator places tinder T on the upper surface of the tinder platform. The tinder combination with tinder is mounted in suspended fashion below an aperture in the grill base such that upon ignition of the tinder a flame extends up through, for example, an interface slide catch collar assembly and into an ignition relationship with supported cooking fuel above.

  • Patent number: 8152514
Abstract: An oil/slurry burner with injection atomization for the gasification of solids-containing liquid fuels under high pressures of e.g. 80 bar (8 MPa) and high temperatures of e.g. 1200 to 1900 degrees centigrade in reactors with liquid slag removal is proposed, wherein a plurality of feeding elements disposed outside the annular duct concentrically with respect to the burner axis are provided for introducing liquid fuel and atomizing agent, the individual feeding elements being implemented intrinsically straight in the burner, inclined to the burner axis in the direction of the burner mouth, and ending at the burner mouth adjacent to the oxidant outlet. By introducing the liquid fuel and atomizing agent in individual completely implemented tubes with a corresponding nozzle, different fuels can be supplied simultaneously via the individual feeds and converted in a flame reaction.

Abstract: Before start-up of a burner, minimum and maximum actuating positions of an actuating drive are set by setting elements. During control of the actuating drive, an automatic firing mechanism receives from a position transducer position signals dependent on the actuating position of the actuating drive reached during operation. The automatic firing mechanism assigns to the minimum actuating position the position signal measured during the feedback of the minimum actuating position of the actuating drive, and assigns to the maximum actuating position of the actuating drive the position signal measured during the feedback of the maximum actuating position of the actuating drive. Using the position signals assigned to the minimum and maximum actuating positions, corresponding control parameters are determined for activating the minimum and maximum actuating positions, and the control parameters are stored.

  • Patent number: 7770551
Abstract: A method ignites the combustion of fuel in a combustion chamber (5) of engine (2), by introducing microwave radiation into the combustion chamber (5). The microwave radiation is produced in a microwave source (7) on the outside of the combustion chamber (5). The introduced microwave radiation is absorbed by the fuel distributed in the combustion chamber (5). The supply of energy, in the fuel, arising from absorption, distributes combustion in a large-volume in the combustion chamber (5), preferably in the entire combustion chamber (5) and in a homogenous manner, and is essentially simultaneously ignited. An associated ignition device (1) and an associated engine (2) are also provided.

Abstract: An afterburner device and a method for operating an afterburner device, especially for chemical reformers for obtaining hydrogen, for making heat available from fuels and/or residual gases from a reforming process and/or a fuel cell process. In this context, heat is supplied in a controlled manner from recirculated combustion gases to a first housing and/or a combustion chamber situated in it and at least in part filled with heat resistant, open-pored foamed ceramics. The regulation takes place, for instance, based on a temperature recorded in the combustion chamber using an infrared light measurement.

  • Patent number: 7762200
Abstract: A method for starting high-performance entrained flow gasification reactors with a combination burner or a plurality of pulverized fuel burners, and an ignition and pilot burner. The ignition and pilot burner is ignited, substoichiometrically with fuel gas and a gasifier containing free oxygen. The reactor is brought to the pressure intended and a flow of a fuel gas is supplied with a partial flow of the gasification agent at a substoichiometric ratio through the fuel lines leading to the fuel burner and ignited by the flame of the ignition and pilot burner with a partial flow of the gasification agent. Next, the pulverized fuel is supplied together with a further oxygen-containing gasifying agent through the supply lines to the pulverized fuel burner and is ignited by the flame of the ignition and pilot burner and by the fuel gas flames of the combustible gas generated at the pulverized fuel burner.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and apparatus for automatically disabling an appliance. When a smoke detector/alarm is activated, a signal or message is sent to at least one safety device operatively coupled to at least one appliance. The appliance is disabled in response to receiving the signal or message. The systems, methods, and apparatus are based on the implicit assumption that, if a smoke detector/alarm is activated, the source of the smoke is likely due to a nearby appliance that is in use.
