Abstract: A furnace is disclosed that includes a burner with a firing rate that is variable between a minimum and a maximum firing rate. After a call for heat is received, the firing rate is set to an initial level above the minimum firing rate, and the burner is ignited. The firing rate is then modulated downward toward the minimum firing rate. If the flame is lost during or after modulation, the burner is reignited and the firing rate is maintained above the firing rate at which the flame was lost until the current call for heat is satisfied. In some cases, the firing rate is maintained until one or more subsequent calls for heat are satisfied.

Abstract: An automated ignition assembly for a gas-fueled appliance includes a pressure plate positioned between an upper bellows and a lower bellows, each of which is in selective communication with a fuel gas source. If fuel gas is directed to the lower bellows, gas within the upper bellows is diverted to an ignition site; as the lower bellows inflates, it lifts the pressure plate and an associated linkage assembly to engage a piezo igniter, which creates a spark at the ignition site. The lower bellows is then deflated and the upper bellows is inflated to again engage the piezo igniter. Once a flame has been generated, or if a flame has not been generated within a predetermined time period, an automated valve disables fuel gas flow to the bellows.

It is so arranged that, unless the reset switch is operated, the memory in the EEPROM is not reset. After resetting, the memory in the EEPROM is read out. The regulator loop has a first port that communicates with a chamber below the main diaphragm of the valve, and a second port that communicates with a chamber above the main diaphragm. An increase in wind at the furnace vent causes changes in pressure in the collector box and the relief box. This change in pressure is delivered to the feedback pressure tap. After demand the second thermal probe cools and the circuit is restored for start-up again. A safety probe positioned in the flame is quiescent. In the event of demand time shut-down, the safety probe will activate the circuits for restart. If failure to start-up continues for a predetermined time, the safety probe circuit will effect permanent shut-down.

  • Patent number: 4452582
Abstract: An electronic spark ignition system for a heating apparatus which does not have a means of attempting repeated ignition attempts if prior attempts at ignition fail is forced into a recycling mode by an independent, self-contained electronic spark ignition recycler. The recycler includes a temperature sensor for detecting output temperature of the heating apparatus, an on/off circuit for activating and deactivating that circuit, a timing determines the length of time allocated for recycling, a triggerable bidirectional switch to force the electronic spark ignition into a repeat mode, and a means for deactivating the recycler after a predetermined condition is met. The temperature sensor activates the timer which periodically triggers the bidirectional switch until ignition occurs or until the recycler is deactivated.

  • Patent number: 4325689
Abstract: A fuel ignition system for a heating apparatus includes a burner connected to a fuel supply, a valve for regulating the flow of fuel to the burner, an electrode assembly for producing a spark to ignite the fuel at the burner, an ignition system control module having input and output terminals for controlling the operation of the valve and the electrode assembly in response to a temperature-actuated device, the system control module producing output signals to open the valve and activate the electrode assembly for a predetermined time period to ignite the burner and locking in a non-operable mode to close the valve and deactivate the electrode assembly if the burner fails to ignite within the predetermined time period, and an automatic reset control for activating the system control module after a time-delay period.

  • Patent number: 4303385
Abstract: An ignition system for use with a source of dc (or full-wave-rectified) power without the need for an inverter includes a flame sensing relay and a checking relay interlocked to achieve lockout if the proper starting sequence or timing are not met or if a flame-out occurs during operation. The checking relay is energized in response to a call-for-heat signal to isolate the flame detection circuitry from its source and commence a trial-for-ignition period in the flame detection circuitry which includes a timing circuit. The timing circuit actuates the flame-sensing relay during the trial-for-ignition period. The flame sensing relay energizes the fuel valve and a spark generator to ignite the fuel. If a flame is detected during the trial-for-ignition period by a flame probe, the timing circuit is disabled and operation continues until the call for heat is terminated as long as the flame is sensed. Another circuit senses flame at the spark gap and disables the spark gap generator after a flame is established.

  • Patent number: 4188182
Abstract: Apparatus for igniting and reigniting combustible fuel emitted from a burner structure by the method of sensing ion current flow across an electrically-conductive spark gap defined in the region in which the fuel is emitted and then generating ignition sparks thereacross whenever the ion current flow indicates the emitted fuel is not burning. The ignition sparks are generated by increasing the current in the primary winding of an ignition coil at a selected rate to a predetermined optimum level and then stopping the current supplied so as to cause the collapse of the electrical field thus generated in the inductive coil.
