  • Patent number: 8851062
Abstract: This invention provides a portable combustion device that provides a cleaner combustion, reduces the kindling period, and provides a more efficient overall combustion through the use of a fan that directs a predetermined volume of airflow over the combustible fuel—typically wood or similar cellulose-based biological solids. The combustion device has a combustion chamber with a fuel source. A housing encloses the TEG on the side of the device that generates an electrical output based on a temperature differential between opposing TEG sides. A heat-conducting probe is mounted to the TEG and protrudes into the combustion chamber. The opposing TEG side contacts a heat sink that interacts with ambient air. A fan draws heated air away the heat sink, and forces the air onto the combusting fuel through a plurality of peripheral ports that connect with an air space located between inner and outer walls of the combustion chamber.

  • Patent number: 7252502
Abstract: The method and apparatus provides a controller (which might comprise a microprocessor) that can control gas flow to a pilot burner in fluid communication with a manual pilot valve and an automatic pilot valve. The exemplary embodiments can comprise a selectable input device that can open the manual pilot valve to allow gas flow to the pilot burner. A pilot flame can then heat one or more thermal detection devices in thermal communication with the pilot burner, wherein the one or more thermal detection devices can output a variable voltage potential to the controller. The controller can then open the automatic pilot valve to maintain gas flow to the pilot burner after the manual pilot valve has been closed. In an exemplary embodiment, the only voltage potential used to power the controller is supplied by the one or more thermal detection devices.

Abstract: Provided is a hydrostat for a portable gas range, which prevents the explosion of a gas container by automatically discharging overcompressed gas from the gas container when the inner pressure of the gas container increases to an explosion pressure. The hydrostat includes a body including a gas outlet, which communicates with a gas inlet of the governor valve, and a sealed room, which communicate with the gas outlet. An opening/closing unit is installed within the sealed room of the body such that it can elastically move up and down in order to discharge overcompressed gas by opening the gas outlet when the inner pressure of the gas container reaches or exceeds a threshold value of deformation. A cap is fixed at the bottom of the body so as to support the opening/closing unit and has a discharge hole for discharging overcompressed gas, which escapes the gas container through the gas outlet.

  • Patent number: 7162980
Abstract: A fuel-fired water heater has main and pilot burners disposed in its combustion chamber. All of the primary combustion air utilized by the main and pilot burners during firing thereof is supplied thereto via an enclosed path extending to the burners from outside of the combustion chamber. A burner clogging detection system is operative to shut down further combustion, upon sensing a condition of the pilot burner flame indicative of a predetermined degree of pilot burner clogging, prior to the main burner being clogged to an unacceptable degree by particulate matter entrained in incoming combustion air being delivered to the main burner.

  • Patent number: 7028642
Abstract: A radiant gas burner within the combustion chamber of a water heater has a pilot flame created using a raw fuel jet that impinges on an interior surface portion of a flame holding outer burner wall portion, representatively of a metal wire mesh material, and is mixed within the burner with combustion air delivered thereto from outside the combustion chamber. The resulting fuel/air mixture passes outwardly through the impinged upon mesh wall portion, which functions as a pilot flame stabilizing structure, and is ignited to form a pilot flame on the exterior of the burner body. A thermocouple portion of a clogging detection system senses a change in the pilot flame shape caused by particulate clogging of the metal mesh material and responsively terminates further gas supply to the water heater.

Abstract: A self-sustaining control for a heating system, having conventional operational modes and pilot burner assembly, is disclosed. A controller directs operation in accordance with a need-based protocol and monitors the condition of a storage device, which provides system power during the stand-by or off mode under normal conditions. A thermo-electric device is in thermal communication with the pilot burner assembly and powers the system whenever the pilot is lit. Regardless of heat need, the controller directs operation in a pilot-on mode, in lieu of an off mode, whenever the storage device is compromised.

  • Patent number: 6881055
Abstract: A system for controlling temperature in an enclosure operates in a low heat or a high heat mode with flame always present. The presently intended use is for providing a cooking grill with a controlled temperature cooking space. An electrically controlled valve having high flow rate and low flow rate settings is interposed in the fuel line for at least one of the burners in the grill. A temperature sensor signals cooking space temperature to a controller that may be a microprocessor. The system includes a keyboard allowing the user to communicate a selected set point to the microprocessor and the microprocessor communicates status to a display. The microprocessor selects the setting of the electrically controlled valve. In a preferred embodiment, the electrically controlled valve is placed in series fuel flow with one of the manually adjustable valves commonly found on cooking grills.

Abstract: A gas furnace responsive to a thermostat includes a thermal switch wired in series between the furnace power supply and the thermostat. A microprocessor connected to the thermal switch detects when the switch opens and closes, carrying out prearranged programs in response thereto. The thermal switch is mounted so that it opens when an over-pressure in the furnace draft system is detected, as evidenced by hot flue gasses passing over the thermal switch probe. The switch is allowed to cycle at least one time before the furnace is disabled. After a certain period of the time, the combustion cycle is reinitiated and the above steps are repeated if the thermal switch again resets.

  • Patent number: 6684821
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a water heater that sustains energy during the standby mode so that it can power energy saving devices while e minimizing energy loss and controlling the stored water temperature. The present invention may include an outer casing, an insulated tank containing flue tubes, a combustion chamber, a burner rack containing a pilot and thermopile assembly, a flue collector, a damper and a draft diverter. These components are preferrably arranged to enable heat from the main burners to be transferred in an efficient manner to the water when needed and heat loss from the water to be minimized when the main burners are not fired. This may be accomplished without the use of external electric power, and the energy producing and heat transferring components of the water heater are optimally balanced, resulting in a sustained energy level that minimizes heat loss, prevents unwanted increases in water temperature, and enables the use of a damper without external electrical power.
