Patent number: 5355996Abstract: Highly compressed ceramic fiber conveyor rolls can provide desirable insulation coupled with extended wear for roller conveying of high temperature articles such as freshly made sheet glass. However, under harsh industrial conditions, as experienced with the conveying of heavy loads consistently at the upper end of operable temperature ranges, such ceramic fiber rolls may be subject to premature wear at the interface between an inner shaft and an outer ceramic fiber roll cover, as well as experience longitudinal roll cracking of the cover. It has now been found that both of these potential cover problems can be successfully addressed by placement within the cover of perforated, rigid disks. Such disks placed occasionally along the roll and within ceramic fiber cover, are particularly suitable for use with hardened covers, where the hardening is more concentrated towards the surface of the cover and the disks are present within a softer inner fiber core of the cover.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 1993Date of Patent: October 18, 1994Assignee: Global Consulting, Inc.Inventor: Charles M. Patent number: 4886450Abstract: Steel charges are heated to rolling temperature in reheating furnaces. It is standard practice for the charge to be moved through such a furnace on continuous water-cooled tubular supports crossing the furnace in a straight line. The supports obstruct charge heat-up to the desired temperature at the points where the charge is in contact with the tubular supports. A lateral offset of the tubular supports or similar designs have been unable to overcome this disadvantage. The tubular supports of the present reheating furnace are therefore several times offset from a straight line through the furnace between the furnace inlet and the furnace exit or, in the case of a furnace with a fixed hearth in the soaking zone, the furnace inlet and the fixed hearth. Each tubular support section between two such offsets is shorter than the upstream tubular support section. The present arrangement is particularly advantageous for pusher-type furnaces or walking-beam furnaces.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1988Date of Patent: December 12, 1989Assignee: Ruhrgas AktiengesellschaftInventor: Helmut Heuss

Patent number: 4828489Abstract: A method, and a kiln, by and in which to fire ceramic tiles (8), or similar items, which are taken along a given path each stage of which is singular in terms of temperature level and other parameters governing the firing cycle. Travelling forward along the path, the tiles are subjected to a succession of alternating forward and reverse movements (30, 31) sequenced in such a way that each passage forward is followed by a shorter movement in reverse.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1987Date of Patent: May 9, 1989Inventor: Francesco Albonetti

Patent number: 4802844Abstract: A retractable, roller hearth for use in an industrial heat treat furnace is disclosed whereby the alloy rollers are retracted from their load bearing position when the furnace heat treat processes are underway thus maintaining the rated load capacity of the furnace. A plurality of guided rail support posts and guided, sealed lift posts accurately assure straight line vertical motion of the refractory base enabling contact between fibrous rope seals to seal the hearth from the cooler, lower portions of the furnace when the hearth is in a raised position.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 1988Date of Patent: February 7, 1989Assignee: Gas Research InstituteInventors: Timothy J. Patent number: 4802845Abstract: The rollers of a roller hearth kiln are coupled to corresponding driving shafts respectively, and each of the driving shafts has one thereof horizontally extended away from the kiln. A case which is disposed along the kiln houses the extended ends of the driving shaft, and vertical sprocket wheels are mounted on the extended ends of the driving shafts in the above case respectively. A rail is secured to the bottom of the case so as to extend below the sprocket wheels, and a driving chain moves on the rail while engaging the sprocket wheels from below.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1987Date of Patent: February 7, 1989Assignee: NGK Insulators, Ltd.Inventor: Yasuhiro Kajiura

Patent number: 4636127Abstract: A countercurrent fluid cooled conveying screw is disclosed. Suitable for furnace applications, the screw includes an outer shaft spatially circumscribing an inner tube. A plurality of hollow, fluid cooled flights are affixed to the outer shaft and are in fluid flow communication with coolant coursing through the screw. The coolant is first directed through the flights and then back through the outer shaft before exiting through the inner tube.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1985Date of Patent: January 13, 1987Assignee: The International Metals Reclamation Co., Inc.Inventors: Francisco Olano, John A. Patent number: 4538986Abstract: The invention concerns a means for supporting the material being treated in continuous-action heat treatment furnaces. The support means consists of a cooled roller (5), on the periphery of which at least two cooled rollers (7) with substantially smaller diameter have been placed. The roller (5) is placed outside the furnaces (13, 16) and/or between two consecutive furnaces. Supporting of the material (18) is carried out by the aid of one roller (7) at a time, the roller (7) rotating at the speed of moving of the material. By the aid of the drive (3) provided for the roller (5), the mutual positioning of the rollers (7) can be changed.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 1984Date of Patent: September 3, 1985Assignee: Outokumpu OyInventors: Seppo I. Patent number: 4525196Abstract: Glass sheet handling devices are provided with glass sheet engaging surfaces composed of a phenolic resin reinforced with fibers of an aromatic polyamide composition. In a specific embodiment of this invention, a sufficient number of said fibers extend to an exposed surface of said devices to develop a coefficient of friction sufficient to prevent relative sliding between the exposed surface of said glass sheet engaging member and said glass sheet.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1984Date of Patent: June 25, 1985Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.Inventors: Michael T. Patent number: RE46010Abstract: Pulling rolls (13) for glass ribbons (11) and methods for manufacturing such rolls are provided. The rolls include a shaft (17), a plurality of heat-resistant discs (15) mounted on the shaft in face-to-face contact, and a pair of fittings (25 or 25,31) affixed to the shaft which apply an axial compressive force to the discs. The magnitude of the axial compressive force is adjusted so that the portions (27) of the roll surface (33) which contact the glass ribbon during use have a Shore D hardness at room temperature of between 30 and 55. The rolls achieve a long service life without applying excessive force to the glass ribbon or generating high levels of particulate contamination.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 2009Date of Patent: May 24, 2016Assignee: Corning IncorporatedInventor: David S.
