  • Patent number: 5934901
Abstract: A dental articulator structure for use in registration of a pair of casts of a dental model which are positioned in an opposing and spaced relationship. The articulator structure includes at least one axially rigid support member having opposing ends from which multi-piece cast attachment members may be orthogonally attached. The at least one axially rigid support member and the orthogonally attachable cast attachment members being an articulator structure that locates the axially rigid support member substantially close to the back molar face of the opposing pair of dental model casts such that confronting translational movement of the dental model casts is prevented in a plane parallel to the axially rigid support member, especially confronting translational movement in a region where back molars may be missing in a dental model.

  • Patent number: 5645425
Abstract: A dental model and articulator system comprises upper and lower dental casts that each receive a corresponding anchor in their respective vertical posterior faces. A generally rectangular articulator main body has a transverse horizontal hinge attachment on its top that connects to an upper arm and the anchor on the upper dental cast. A vertical pivot is provided in the bottom end of the articulator main body that connects to the anchor on the lower dental cast. The upper and lower anchors attach to their respective articulator parts with a stem-in-sleeve arrangement that allows independent lateral tilting of both the upper and lower dental casts for occlusal and masticatory registration and fixing with glue. The vertical pivot also attaches to the articulator main body with a stem-in-sleeve arrangement that allows further degrees of freedom for the occlusal and masticatory registration between the upper and lower dental casts and for fixing the registration with glue.

  • Patent number: 5573397
Abstract: A technique for creating "universally" calibrated dental articulators includes using a replica which simulates upper and lower dental models of a patient to properly align mounting plates to an articulator. The mounting plates are releasably attached to the replica before upper and lower frame members of the articulator are closed about the replica and fixed to the mounting plates. The replica is then detached from the mounting plates and used to form additional articulators identically calibrated with mounting plates. Base plates releasably attachable to the mounting plates are then used to form and mount the dental models. A first base plate is fixed to a first dental model and is then releasably attached to a mounting plate on the articulator. A second base plate is then releasably attached to the opposing mounting plate on the articulator.

  • Patent number: 5176515
Abstract: A characteristic of optimal facial harmony is a correlation of the A/P (Anterior/Posterior) position of the maxillary incisors with the forehead. When the forehead is canted about 7 degrees or less, the A/P position of the maxillary incisors should match that of the middle of the forehead. For every degree the forehead is canted more than 7 degrees, the A/P position of the maxillary incisors should be 0.6 millimeters more anterior than the middle of the forehead. The extent to which the A/P position of the maxillary incisors is forward or back of the forehead's midpoint can be judged in millimeters quite accurately by viewing a patient in profile with the patient's forehead and maxillary incisors fully bared. Once the linear decision is made then the A/P treatment goal position can be physically measured and recorded using a novel bite fork (58), an improved facebow (56), and a new piece of equipment called a verticalizer (60).

  • Patent number: 4417873
Abstract: A dental articulator or apparatus is disclosed for testing the accuracy of dentures during occlusion. The articulator is designed to simulate the complex three-dimensional motion of a human jaw and includes a longitudinally-extending base, an upper denture carrier pivotally mounted above the base for movement in a vertical plane, and a lower denture carrier pivotally connected to the base by a bearing-and-slot arrangement that permits three-dimensional curvilinear movement of the lower carrier. By attaching dentures to the carriers and moving the dentures through various centric, eccentric, lateral and protrusive movements against one another, the articulator permits "high spots" on the occlusal surfaces of the dentures to be located so that the dentures can be accurately ground to a proper fitting.

Abstract: A dental articulator has a tooth supporting tray secured to a platform by a key and keyway wherein the sidewalls of the keyway are resiliently supported to permit yielding of the sidewalls to overcome any clogging by particulate matter which may be present in a place of use of the articulator. A set of legs upstanding from the tray maintains orientation of the tray relative to the platform.

  • Patent number: 4365955
Abstract: A dental articulator in which maxillary and mandibular frames have at opposite sides interengaged condylar elements to simulate the jaw movements of a dental patient whose maxillary and mandibular dental casts are mounted on the respective frames. The mandibular frame has condylar spheres slidably engaged between upper and lower parallel side walls of grooves in condylar guide elements angularly adjustable on opposite sides of the maxillary frame, the upper side walls of the grooves being transparent for visual observation of the orbital and rotational movements of the condylar spheres in the grooves during relative movements of the frames to simulate the jaw movements of the dental patient.

  • Patent number: 4354836
Abstract: The invention relates to articulator devices for reproducing the movements of the mandible. The device according to the invention comprises means for sampling the movements of the mandible, composed of an upper plate, fixed to the patient's skull and a lower plate which is fixed to the mandible by way of a buccal fork. Six displacement sensors connect the two plates together, said sensors being joined to the said plates by way of swivel joints. The device further comprises an articulator composed of two plates on which are secured the casts of the upper and lower jaws of the patient, which plates are joined together by way of artificial muscles occupying the same position as that occupied by the sensors and each muscle comprising a servo-motor controlled by a sensor. The invention finds an application in the remote- or delayed-testing and adjusting of dental prostheses.

  • Patent number: 4330275
Abstract: The articulator is the type which has an upper part with a horizontal branch and a lower part with a horizontal branch below and substantially parallel to the upper branch. The upper part has a pair of spaced wings connected to the rear of the upper branch and angling upwardly at a small angle therefrom as well as an adjustable incisor pin extending downwardly from the front end thereof. The lower branch has a pair of spaced articulator pins extending upwardly into slots in the wings of the upper part as well as an incisal tray angling downwardly from the front end to receive the incisal pin. Thus the upper part is supported in the lower part as a tripod with a relatively low center of gravity. A mold is provided to be connected to the articulator.

  • Patent number: 4278426
Abstract: Duplicatable maxillary denture materials, e.g., partial or complete dentures, wax-ups and bite blocks, are prepared employing the relator assembly and process of the invention. The process involves forming the maxillary denture materials from a rough maxillary cast of the patient's mouth that has a base and an expression of the maxillary alveolar ridge including the anterior palatine papilla and hamular notches. In the process, the cast is suspended over a horizontally extending, flat occlusal base member at a predetermined height corresponding to the proposed incisal length of the denture materials with members of substantially equal height, located on the occlusal table, that contact the cast at the palatine papilla and hamular notches. The base of the suspended rough cast is luted to a maxillary base member that is located over and substantially parallel to the occlusal base member to form a cast whose base is parallel to the hamular-incise plane.

  • Patent number: 4251209
Abstract: A system and method is disclosed for obtaining precisely registered, articulated castings of upper and lower dental impressions. The dental impressions are obtained through use of a dental tray having a non-porous, bite-deformable central septum. The impression material for the upper dental impression is contained in the upper portion of the tray. The impression material for the lower dental impression is contained in the lower portion of the tray and is supported by a bottom cover which is removed subsequent to placement of the tray in the mouth. As the patient bites, the impression material in the upper and lower portions of the dental tray is molded to the contour of the teeth and gums in their proper relationship with the teeth closed. After the material has set, the tray containing registered upper and lower impressions is removed from the mouth and placed into a mold.
