  • Patent number: 8936466
Abstract: Drilling of an implant shaft is carried out with a handpiece tool whose location and angular orientation with respect to a radiographic working guide is updated in real time with respect to the radiographic working guide and anatomical structures of the patient, free of viewing obstructions. Prior to the drilling, the radiographic working guide is fitted to a particular patient. Real-time imaging support is provided on a display of a computer, wherein the radiographic workpiece guide includes a plurality of fiducial markers that define a substantially planar reference surface of the radiographic workpiece guide. The radiographic workpiece guide also includes an alignment structure located a predetermined distance from a pilot hole proximate the work site. The image is updated based on an initial radiographic scan and updated position information from the handpiece tool as to location and angular orientation of the handpiece tool relative to the workpiece guide.

The invention also relates to a method of marking teeth using the device. The device comprises one or more elongated rectangular metal plates. At each end of each plate is a “leg” that extends downward, with a “foot” covered by plastic. Cylindrical “arms” extend from both sides of each leg at right angles to the plate. Pencil lead (graphite) holders pass through the bars on each side of the plate, so that the pencil leads extend vertically downward and parallel to the plate. Knobs above the holders can be rotated to move the pencil lead up or down. Near each end of each plate, the distance of the pencil lead from the foot is marked in millimeters. • Patent number: 8858228
Abstract: Method and kit for producing implant drilling guides positioned at the proper orientation to avoid inadvertent damage to critical regions of the patient's jaw when drilling to place dental implant screws. The method works by placing a small post device with x-ray visible depth markers in the root socket of the patient's tooth immediately after tooth extraction. The post device may additionally be configured to guide the drill at a position and angle that is different from that of the original tooth socket. This post device is used to construct a removable guide that anchors to the patient's adjacent teeth, and preserves the location and orientation of the extracted tooth root. Once the root socket is filled in with new bone, the guide, in conjunction with the X-ray post depth information, can be used to direct drilling along the same route as the old tooth root, thus avoiding critical structures.

Abstract: A dental drill is disclosed which allows for an osteotomy to be formed in a shape which closely matches the cylindrical shape of many dental implants. In so doing, the implant engages more tissue of the resulting osteotomy, thus resulting in greater ability for the tissue to penetrate and fuse with the implant while also reducing the chances of infection and reducing the overall recovery time. In addition, by forming the dental drill with a relatively obtuse angulation between the termini of the drill flutes, the cutting forces are spread across a larger cutting area thus reducing wear on the drill itself. Moreover, by spreading the cutting force over a larger area, the heat generated by the drill is reduced and thus the discomfort afforded to the patient is reduced.

Abstract: A method and marker element to determine the position of a prosthetic element (2) which is fixed to the jaw (13) of a person, such as a dental implant. An image is formed of the jaw of a reproduction model of this jaw which is provided with the prosthetic element (2), by means of X-rays or magnetic resonance. At least one marker element (3) is then provided on the prosthetic element (2) which produces a strong contrast in imaging techniques. The position of the marker is then formed by X-rays or by magnetic resonance, and the position of the prosthetic element (2) is then derived from the observed position of the marker element (3).

Abstract: An arrangement including an instrument for the insertion of a dental implant including a template placeable on a bone or surrounding tissue. The template, or a first sleeve arranged within the template, includes a through-recess, through which the instrument can be guided. The arrangement enables exact alignment and guidance of the instrument and easy handling. A second sleeve that is axially displaceable on the instrument is provided, and axially fixed in a base position through automatically releasable connecting elements with predetermined retaining force such that when the retaining force is exceeded, the connecting elements can be automatically released and the second sleeve can be axially displaced. The instrument, together with the axially fixed second sleeve, can be inserted in the continuous recess and is aligned in the template via the outer surface of the second sleeve, the surface being configured relative to the inner surface of the recess.

  • Patent number: 8535055
Abstract: A method and kit for producing implant drilling guides positioned at the proper angle and orientation so as to avoid inadvertent damage to critical regions of the patient's jaw when drilling to place dental implant screws. The method works by placing a small post with x-ray visible depth markers in the root of the patient's tooth immediately after tooth extraction. This post, along with guideblocks, optional washers, reduction or expansion guides, and rapidly hardening guide materials (such as acrylics or thermosetting materials) is used to construct a removable guide that anchors to the patient's adjacent teeth, and preserves the location and orientation of the extracted tooth root. Once the root is filled in with new bone, the guide, in conjunction with the X-ray post depth information, can be used to direct drilling along the same route as the old tooth root, thus avoiding critical structures.

An operator of a prosthetic designing system can receive information, such as from a scanner, which provides information on the topology of the patient's dentition. The operator can use this information to design a custom prosthetic to fit the patient. Part of the designing process involves using a finish line defined for a preparation as a segmentation line for a physical die corresponding to the preparation, and using a path of draw line as an insertion axis line for a dental prosthetic.
