  • Patent number: 5122057
Abstract: A dental cartridge for dispensing a dental material having a body portion made of a material transparent to at least a portion of the visible light spectrum and opaque to the actinic light of the dental material contained therein. Also, a dental cartridge having a body portion formed from a toroidal segment and a coaxial nozzle attached thereto. The dental cartridges are used in a dental syringe for application of the dental material to a patient. Several embodiments provide various discharge end configurations, including hemispherical, conical frustum, and flat. Additionally, dosing indicia are placed on the body portion of the dental cartridge, permitting the dentist to fill the dental cartridge with a predetermined volume of dental material. A specially configured piston having an appendage thereon is used in combination with the dental cartridge for extruding substantially all of the costly dental material therein.

  • Patent number: 5061179
Abstract: A manual extruder and cartridge having interlocking or mating bearing surfaces. The front end or tip portion of a dental material manual extruder is formed with flexible sidewalls to define a snap or friction fit chamber adapted to receive a cartridge containing a supply of dental material. The rear of the chamber is formed with an angled shoulder or bearing surface. A cartridge, adapted to be snap fit, press fit, or friction fit into the chamber has a flange having complementary angled surface so that when a viscous dental material is extruded, the large forces generated cause the angled surfaces of the flange and adjacent shoulder to interlock and prevents the flexible sidewalls of the barrel from separating apart and prohibits the cartridge from becoming unintentionally detached from the manual extruder or being wedged between the flexible sidewalls.

Abstract: An apparatus for applying dental bonding agents to tooth surfaces. The apparatus includes a syringe-type dispenser for holding a quantity of bonding agent and an applicator tip having short bristles at one end. The applicator tip is curved to accommodate access to tooth surfaces undergoing restorative dental procedures. The short bristles are in communication with the syringe-type dispenser, thereby allowing the bonding agent to be continuously applied to the tooth surfaces without the need to stop the procedure and rewet the applicator in a bonding agent source. The syringe-type applicator permits accurate control over the amount of bonding agent applied to the tooth surface. In this way, the tooth surface receives neither an excessive nor an insufficient amount of the bonding agent. Moreover, the short bristles permit the bonding agent to be applied to the tooth surface without damaging the fragile crystalline structure produced during acid etching.

  • Patent number: 4560352
Abstract: A one-hand operated dispenser for metering dental compositions comprises a casing for accommodating the dental composition between a forward dispensing opening and a plunger which is slidable within the casing. The plunger is advanced by means of a threaded spindle which engages in a nut mounted at the casing rear end so as to be secured against rotation and axial displacement. The casing rear end is rotatably supported within a sleeve which in turn is detachably inserted in a handle. The sleeve is formed with an axially extending slot through which a finger is visible which is disposed at the rear end of the spindle. When the handle is gripped, the casing may be rotated between the thumb and index finger such that the spindle advances the plunger thereby urging the dental composition out of the dispensing opening. During the forward movement of the spindle the finger travels forwardly in the axially extending slot and indicates the level of the dental composition.

  • Patent number: 4551135
Abstract: The invention comprises a syringe for extrusion of a semi-plastic mass, or a mass having a paste-like consistency. In a preferred embodiment, the syringe is so-designed to permit mixing of two components of a plasticizable mixture within the syringe barrel. The bore of the syringe barrel is flared to facilitate extrusion of the plastic mass therefrom. The parts of the syringe ready for use are packaged in a one-piece tray which serves not only for shipping and storing of the syringe, which may be preloaded with one of the components of the plasticizable mixture, together with the associated syringe parts, but which also serves, when opened for use, as a convenient tray for handling the syringe while mixing the two components of the plasticizable mixture prior to extrusion.

  • Patent number: 4515563
Abstract: The specification discloses an amalgam carrier for pushing amalgams into previously difficultly accessed tooth cavities such as in distal and lingual surfaces. The carrier includes an elongated handle, a support arm extending laterally of the handle, and a release mechanism mounted on the support arm and defining an amalgam bore opening away from the support arm in a direction generally common with the handle. The release mechanism is actuable in the vicinity of the support arm whereby the carrier can be firmly grasped about said handle and the release mechanism actuated by the user's thumb. Also disclosed is a method of pushing an amalgam utilizing the amalgam carrier of the present invention.

  • Patent number: 4492576
Abstract: A dental syringe and a method of packaging and dispensing a dental material wherein the package containing the dental material comprises a cartridge containing a bulk supply of dental material, and which cartridge is constructed so as to function as a syringe for effecting the extrusion of the dental material therefrom as may be needed in a dental restorative procedure. The cartridge comprises an elongated tubular barrel having an open end portion and a forward discharging orifice portion through which the material is extruded. A displaceable piston seals the rear end of the barrel to confine the dental material within the barrel, and which cartridge can be readily attached to a handle and associated plunger to complete a syringe assembly. The plunger is also provided with a device for relieving the back pressure imparted to the cartridge piston during an extruding operation to prohibit any unwanted drooling of the material therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4479781
Abstract: A one-hand operated dispenser for metering dental compositions comprises a casing for receiving the dental composition between a forward dispensing end and a plunger which is movably mounted within the casing. The plunger is moved forwardly by means of a threaded spindle which engages with a nut disposed on the rear casing end so as to be secured against rotation and axial movement. The thus formed assembly may be inserted into two bifurcated brackets of a generally U-shaped receptacle forming part of a manipulating member. The spindle is guided in the one bracket so as to be axially movable and non-rotatable, while the casing with the nut is mounted in the other bracket so as to be non-displaceable but rotatable. When the manipulating member is gripped, the casing may be turned between thumb and index finger such that the spindle is pushed forwards, whereby the dental composition exits from the dispensing opening.

  • Patent number: 4472141
Abstract: An all purpose dental syringe and delivery system for dispensing various types of dental materials as may be required in the performance of various dental procedures e.g. the administering of anesthesia, making impressions, performing root canals, filling cavities, etc. that includes a power handle having a plunger which is incrementally advanced upon each actuation of the power handle and a plurality of interchangeable barrel assemblies. Each of the plurality of barrels assemblies includes an associated dispensing nozzle, each being operative to dispense a particular dental material according to a given procedure. Co-operatively associated with the plunger are interchangeable plunger tips for complementing a particular barrel assembly for dispensing a particular material therefrom, and each barrel and associated parts are color coded to facilitate the use and application of the syringe.
