  • Patent number: 10056062
Abstract: A music application guides a user with some musical experience through the steps of creating and editing a musical enhancement file that enhances and plays in synchronicity with an audio signal of an original artist's recorded performance. This enables others, perhaps with lesser musical ability than the original artist, to play-along with the original artist by following melodic, chordal, rhythmic, and verbal prompts. The music application accounts for differences in the timing of the performance from a standard tempo by guiding the user through the process of creating a tempo map for the performance and by associating the tempo map with MIDI information of the enhancement file. Enhancements may contain MIDI information, audio signal information, and/or video signal information which may be played back in synchronicity with the recorded performance to provide an aural and visual aid to others playing-along who may have less musical experience.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention are generally directed to an Audio-Story Engine that includes a repository of prerecorded audio files that, when played in a certain sequence, with user provided recordings placed throughout, tell a story. To obtain the user provided recordings, the Audio-Story Engine asks the user to make audio recordings of various words or phrases. For example, the Audio-Story Engine may ask the user a series of questions in order to record and store the user's audible responses. Upon completion, the Audio-Story Engine plays back a completed story that incorporates the user's audio recordings by playing an appropriate user recording after playing a prerecorded audio file. This is repeated several times in sequence to form a seamless, customized, audio story. In addition, the Audio-Story Engine may alter the pitch or sound of the user's recorded words to match the pitch of the prerecorded story.

  • Patent number: 8956164
Abstract: The invention teaches students all of the graphic representations of phonemes and orthography using a series of word charts (covering over 18,000 independent words) and integrated program materials. The graphic representations of phonemes are presented to a student according to the frequency of use in words and in the language, and the progressive dependence of one set of graphic representations of phonemes on another. The teaching methods of this invention provide a system for learning how to decode and encode as interchangeable skills. Thus, the student learns to reason out the sounds and spelling of thousands of words. Integrated program learning materials provide mnemonic devices to reinforce the learning in a systematic way.

Abstract: A systems, methods, and products for language learning software that automatically extracts text from corpora using various natural-language processing product features, which can be combined with custom-designed learning activities to offer a needs-based, adaptive learning methodology. The system may receive a text, extract keywords pedagogically valuable to non-native language learning, assign a difficulty score to the text using various linguistic attributes of the text, generate a list of potential distractors for each keyword in the text to implement in learning activities, and topically tag the text against a taxonomy based on the content. This output is then used in conjunction with a series of learning activity-types designed to meet learners' language skill needs and then used to create dynamic, adaptive activities for them.

Abstract: Methods of conducting generative language training using a training corpus having a plurality of words and a plurality of stimuli are described. A stimulus is presented via an electronic display. A selection is received from visual representations of a plurality of the words represented on the display. It is determined whether the selected words correspond to the represented words in the stimulus. A mastery level can be determined based on correspondence of the responses and stimuli and the training corpus or sequence modified based on the mastery level. Another method includes receiving mastery-level data for multiple learners and determining a training sequence using relative difficulties determined from the mastery-level data. Another method includes determining a proficiency level using the correspondence of responses and, if the determined proficiency level corresponds to an intervention criterion, performing an intervention sequence including detecting word selections and unlocking inputs.

Abstract: I disclose processes and methods that by combining pictures in specific ways could boost, enforce, and optimize language learning. Herein I disclose the combination of several pictures all of them related to the same word in order to elicit said word in the observer. Also, by showing a word together with several photos, and by having to choose the photo/s related to the word, the observer can enforce the word learning process. Moreover, I describe the replacement headers of classical multi-choice questions with a photograph. I also show that by intermingling pictures and words, photos can become language units in the same token as conventional words. Finally as a practical embodiment of this method, I provide a game that can be both entertaining and educational.

  • Patent number: 8840400
Abstract: In a communication between individuals having different levels of skill in a language, communication by the more skilled individual is controlled so as to keep it at a level understandable by the lesser skilled individual. For example, a native speaker's communication with a student learning his language (the target language) is monitored by an interface and compared with a stored model representing the student's knowledge and ability in the language. Should the native speaker communicate in a way that would not be understood by the student, for example, by using vocabulary or a sentence structure beyond the student's ability, the interface will notify the native speaker. The interface might then suggest an alternate word or sentence structure to the native speaker, inviting him to use the alternate communication. The native speaker can then substitute and send the alternate communication.
