Publication number: 20130177881Abstract: A tool, for teaching and learning multiplication includes two strips. The first strip has numbers set down in sequence from left to right in order of increasing value with each subsequent number increasing in value by adding the first number to the immediately preceding number in the sequence. The second strip is a filter, which when overlain on the first strip blocks out a repeating fixed quantity of the numbers to leave a visible second sequence such that any visible number in the visible second sequence is a fixed number additive to an immediately preceding blocked-out number. This arrangement means that any selected number in the visible second sequence is the product of the filter number times a counted position from the left of the selected number. The tool is preferably assembled so that there are numerous strips in a set that have a pivotal connection.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 9, 2013Publication date: July 11, 2013Inventor: Ariane Watkins

Patent number: 5957692Abstract: An article of clothing such as a bib, T-shirt, pants, dress, pajamas, etc. for a baby, toddler, or child having one or more inverted items, for example characters, numbers, diagrams, pictures, letters, designs, figures, or combinations thereof, on the front of the article so that, they appear right-side-up to the infant or toddler wearing the article and up-side-down to the adult or care giver. Such an article can be used to teach a child numbers, letters, pictures, the alphabet, numerical system, and the like while a child is wearing the article. It is believed that by putting the items in the proper orientation for right-side-up viewing by the child, the child may learn more quickly and not be confused when these items are shown right-side-up on the television and in reading materials.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1997Date of Patent: September 28, 1999Inventors: Jill J. Patent number: 5951299Abstract: The present invention involves the use of numerical digits with markers and attribute tags as a means to represent quantities, facilitate mathematical manipulation, and solve problems. The given number of markers on each digit corresponds to the value of the digit. For example, the digit three is enhanced with three markers. The attribute tags are also provided with a given number of markers, for example, ten, for math problems in base ten. The digits and the attribute tags are then used to represent and solve math problems including, but not limited to, learning ones, tens, hundreds, thousands columns, addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division, of whole numbers, of fractions, of negative whole numbers and of negative fractions, as well as decimals and exponents. The problems are quantitatively viewed, manipulated, and solved directly on the numerical digits incorporating the markers and attribute tags.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 1998Date of Patent: September 14, 1999Inventor: Linda S. Kim

Patent number: 5620324Abstract: An educational kit for instilling in children a positive self-image at an early age. The kit (known as "ALPHA BLOCKS") teaches young children the complete alphabet and numeral system in a way that is fun, captivating, hands-on and helps them acquire understanding of divergent shapes and colors. The kit includes alphanumeric symbols ranging from the letters of the alphabet to numerals 0 to 9. The symbols are separable into dual sections via a dovetail and groove connection. The dovetail and groove connection ensures a strong and study attachment that permits easy separation of the symbols by the children. Each symbol has a unique color that helps distinguish it from the other symbols. This assists the children in assembling the symbols and also helps them develop the ability to distinguish colors. Included also in the kit is a receptacle useful in storing the complete set of alphanumeric symbols and displays each individual symbol (with its appropriate color) in both an attached and detached arrangement.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 1995Date of Patent: April 15, 1997Inventor: Robert S. Rettke

Patent number: 4382794Abstract: An instructional aid consisting of a plurality of objects useful in teaching and understanding basic concepts of number, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Each of the objects in the plurality corresponds to some integer number between one and ten and has a thickness representing the number to which it corresponds. Moreover, each object has a surface having a color or combination of colors representing the prime number or composite number to which it corresponds. The surface having such color or combination of colors has the shape of the Arabic numeral representing the number to which the object corresponds. Alternatively, this surface has the shape of a symmetrical figure with a number of sides equal to the value of the number to which the object corresponds. As a further alternative, this surface consists of a linear composite of unit surfaces, the number of such unit surfaces being equal to the value of the number to which the object corresponds.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1981Date of Patent: May 10, 1983Inventor: Ann M. Patent number: 4240213Abstract: The present educational amusement device includes a horizontally pivoted balance arm and several pairs of matched game pieces. The game pieces of each pair include one which displays a non-verbal symbol and another one which displays the word for that symbol. The game pieces of each pair are equal in weight to each other but different in weight from the game pieces of every other pair. Therefore, the balance arm will assume a horizontal position only if two game pieces placed on it belong to the same pair. A downwardly extending front wall of the balance arm presents a window which registers with and fully uncovers a smiling face symbol on the pivotal support for the balance arm only when the balance arm is horizontal.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1979Date of Patent: December 23, 1980Inventor: Matthew R.
