Photochemical Activation Of Reactions Patents (Class 436/905)
  • Patent number: 4555490
Abstract: A method using light ("photodevelopment") to develop a metallic silver image of biopolymers, particularly nucleic acids and proteins separated on polyacrylamide gels, whereby it is possible to visualize protein and nucleic acid patterns within 10 minutes after electrophoretic separation. This "photodevelopment" method requires only two solutions: a solution to "fix" the proteins and a solution containing silver ions, which produces an image when exposed to light. This type of protein stain has achieved a sensitivity of about 0.5 ng of protein. DNA separated on polyacrylamide may also be visualized with this stain.

  • Patent number: 4515896
Abstract: A method for determining the spatial and phase distribution of a liquid-vapor multiphase fluid. The method comprises adding a fluorescent monomer and a quencher to the fluid to be studied. The fluid is then dispersed and the monomer excited. The excited monomer combines with the quencher to form a fluorescent exciplex. The monomer fluorescence is predominantly in the vapor phase and the exciplex fluorescence is predominantly in the liquid phase.

  • Patent number: 4466941
Abstract: A photosensitive composition is disclosed, which is capable of offering a visual, calibrated reaction to the presence of ultraviolet radiation. The composition comprises a complex of a leuco dye and animal-derived serum albumin. The preparation of this complex has been found to stabilize the leuco dyes, to avoid fading after the presentation of a color reaction upon exposure. Also, the leuco dye-serum albumin albumin complex is capable of exacting calibration, so that scientifically significant quantitative measurements of ultraviolet light exposure can be made. Moreover, the present composition eliminates the need for the addition to the leuco dye of various activator compounds, that are chemically unstable, e.g. volatile, or present potential exposure to toxicity, in the instance where personal applications for the photosensitive composition are contemplated. The present invention includes a method of preparing the photosensitive composition, including the preparation of an ultraviolet light indicator.

  • Patent number: 4405720
Abstract: A silver stain method for polypeptides in gels comprising the sequential steps of photo-reversing the polypeptide-gel by treatment with an oxidizing agent, forming a latent stain image by treating the polypeptide-gel with a photosensitive salt, and developing the stain image by treating the polypeptide-gel with a reducing agent.

  • Patent number: 4389217
Abstract: A recording device is described, useful as an integrated time-temperature or radiation-dosage history indicator. The device contains a substrate having deposited thereon at least two indicating units, one being unreacted and representing zero time of exposure and the other unit being pre-reacted. Each unit is comprised of an acetylenic compound containing at least one --C.tbd.C--C.tbd.C-- group, capable of reacting by 1,4-addition polymerization thereby forming an end-point color after an irreversible, progressive color change upon thermal annealing or exposure to actinic radiation. The end-point color represents an integrated time-temperature history of thermal annealing or radiation-dosage history. Each unit is constructed such that the time required to form the end-point color by thermal annealing at a given temperature or for a known thermal history, or exposure to actinic radiation at a given average radiation dosage rate, is predetermined.

  • Patent number: 4384980
Abstract: A composition is described comprising at least two co-crystallized acetylenic compounds, of different chemical structures, each containing at least one --C.tbd.C--C.tbd.C-- group and substituents selected from the group consisting of sulfonate, urethane and alcohol radicals, at least one of the compounds capable of ungergoing a contrasting color change upon exposure to actinic radiation or thermal annealing, wherein the composition exhibits a substantially different thermogram than the sum of thermograms of the individual components as obtained by differential scanning alorimetry.A device is also described useful for measuring the time-temperature or radiation-dosage history of an article comprising a substrate having deposited thereon the described composition.A process is also described for producing the composition of this invention.
