  • Patent number: 5751544
Abstract: The present invention provides an improved routing arrangement for a cable that electrically connects the lid to the base of a notebook computer. The invention routes the cable along a hollow interior of a hinge mechanism. This invention has three aspects. First, the hinge mechanism allows an electrical cable, connecting the lid to the base, to traverse a large fraction of the entire hinge length. This reduces the stress put on the cable by flexing and twisting because the stress can now be distributed over a larger segment of the cable. Second, the hinge mechanism allows the cable to enter the lid portion from the hinge mechanism at the middle of the notebook computer. This reduces the weakening caused to the hinge and the lid in accommodating the cable. Lastly, hinge mechanism consists of few parts, allowing for a simple and inexpensive manufacturing and assembly process.

Abstract: A rotatable bushing for reducing bending fatigue on a flat cable between a display screen cover and a base of a portable computer comprises an elongate cylindrical body having a diametric slot therethrough. The bushing is positioned along the hinge axis between the cover and the base of the portable computer. The cable extends from the cover display screen, through the slot, and to circuitry within the base of the computer. MYLAR Plastic shields also extend through the slot on either side of the cable. When the cover is closed and opened over 180.degree., the cable applies force to the bushing, which is free to rotate as dictated by the force applied by the cable. The rotation of the bushing effectively provides two bending regions on the top and bottom of the bushing slot so that the cable does not bend through the entire range of motion of the cover at a single point. Since the bending of the cable is distributed, fatigue due to bending stress is significantly decreased.

  • Patent number: 5390075
Abstract: An electronic apparatus (for example, a portable computer) which includes two portions (for example a display and a keyboard) which are connected, electrically, by a flexible cable. The apparatus provides a unique coupling scheme wherein a movable member is used which moves (for example, rotationally) on at least a part of each of the two portions in a manner substantially independent of the motion of such parts. The flexible cable passes through this member (through opposite openings in the sides thereof) and, significantly, engages the member during movement (pivotal) of one/both of the two portions to assist in effecting the member's rotation. Such movement is attained without harm to the cable, while assuring a compact design for the final product incorporating the coupling structure.

Abstract: Conductors of a flexible printed circuit routed through a hollow two axis articulated hinge allow a calculator with rotating case halves to possess a keyboard portion in each half of the case. The conductors routed through the hollow articulated hinge are generally centered about one axis of hinge rotation for approximately half the length of the axis, whereupon they transition by either a U-turn or a jog to continue as centered about the other axis of hinge rotation. The conductors may be an integral part of a flexible membrane keyboard assembly having portions located in both halves of the calculator's case. Strain reliefs at the locations where the conductors traverse the case halves, and two in the hinge, at about the center thereof, limit and apportion the torsional flexing experienced by the conductors. The torsional flexing experienced by the flexible conductors increases the number of cycles of rotation they can undergo without breaking, as compared to conventional bending.
