Abstract: A hermetically-sealed edge-connect header that can withstand high temperatures, high pressures (or high vacuum levels), and high vibration environments, along with two corresponding connectors are disclosed. After brazing the edge-connect header components, the assembly is machined to form a slot with a portion of each of a plurality of electrical conductors removed in the machining process, resulting in a header with a high pin density. During the process of mating the first connector design to the edge-connect header, a plurality of wipers in the connector deflect, thereby causing the wipers to extend from the connector and contact the corresponding electrical conductors in the header. During the process of mating the second connector design to the edge-connect header, each of a plurality of wipers formed of low-mass, compliant metal wool, forms multiple contact points with a corresponding electrical conductor in the header.

  • Patent number: 5681180
Abstract: An electrical connector provides for the termination of discrete insulated conductors of a multi-conductor cable. The connector includes an insulative connector housing supporting plural electrical contacts having insulation displacing contact portions. A conductor holding block is movably supported by the housing with respect to the insulation displacing contact portions. The conductor holding block includes contact slots for receipt of the insulation displacing contact portions. The conductor holding block further includes passages in communication with the contact slots for receipt of the conductors. The conductor holding block is movable between a conductor receiving position and a conductor termination position. The conductor holding block is continuously supported by the connector housing so as to define a conductor support position to temporarily support the conductors against the insulation displacing contact portions without effecting conductor termination.

  • Patent number: 5577930
Abstract: An electrical connector includes a dielectric housing having a conductor-receiving groove defined at least in part by a pair of side walls between which an elongated insulated conductor is receivable essentially normally of its length. An electrical contact has an insulation displacement termination section disposed in the groove. A pair of inwardly-directed wings are provided in the groove and spaced from and facing one another to provide a slot therebetween. The conductor is movable through the slot past free ends of the wings into insulation-displacement termination with the termination section of the contact. A pair of retention ribs face inwardly of the side walls of the groove essentially below the wings for embracing and thereby retaining the conductor terminated by the contact.

  • Patent number: 5571145
Abstract: An electrical plug assembly comprises an electrically conductive tip, secured to a cable by an electrical conductor. A rigid housing portion encloses the tip, conductor, and a portion of the cable and possesses sufficient strength to protect the electrical conductor from breakage. The tip is non-rotatably coupled to the rigid portion. A strain relief portion is formed of material more flexible than the rigid portion and is non-rotatably coupled thereto. The strain relief portion partially encloses the cable to relieve strain applied to the cable.

  • Patent number: 5547391
Abstract: An electrical connector is provided for commonly connecting a plurality of conductors, such as insulated conductor wires. An insulating housing has a wire-receiving face, a base and generally parallel side walls extending between the base and the face, defining an elongated cavity therewithin. A strip of terminal devices is assembled in the elongated cavity. Each terminal device includes at least one insulation-displacement wire-terminating slot for reception of an insulated conductor wire. Wire-admitting slots are provided in each housing side wall aligned with the wire-terminating slots in the terminal devices. Each wire-admitting slot includes a first, wire-restraining section for temporarily holding an insulated conductor wire prior to insertion into the respective wire-terminating slot, and a second, wire-securing section for finally holding the insulated conductor wire when inserted into the wire-terminating slot.

  • Patent number: 5520550
Abstract: The present connector has a structure which makes it possible to execute a step of mounting a wire holder serving also as a cover member to a housing main body and a step of connecting electrical wires to their respective pressure contact terminals in one operation to simplify the assembly thereof and is thus suitable for mass production. A housing main body supports the pressure contact edges of the pressure contact terminals in an upwardly bent position with respect to the male tabs of the pressure contact terminals. A wire holder holds a plurality of electric wires provisionally in such a manner that the wires can be pressure contacted with their respective pressure contact edges, and serves also as a cover member to close the upper opening of the housing main body, through which opening the pressure contact edges are exposed. By mounting the wire holder to the housing main body, the wires can be connected to the pressure contact terminals.
