Abstract: Presence of a module, such as a DIMM, in an information handling system is detected by selectively altering the function of socket pins at opposing ends of the module socket for use in detection of module pins in contact with the socket pins. For example, ground pins at opposing ends of the socket are selectively interfaced with a detection circuit that applies a voltage through a pull up resistor to generate a logic high if the ground pin is not connected to a module ground pin and a logic low if the ground pin is connected to a module ground pin. Presence detection at opposing ends of the module identifies partially inserted modules where one end indicates a ground pin interface while the opposing end does not.

  • Patent number: 7654857
Abstract: A multimeter for testing a plurality of electrical parameters comprises a case having a plurality of test lead jacks. Each of the test lead jacks includes a unitary conductive socket. Preferably, the sockets are made of metal such as brass. A circuit board located in the case has jack conductors in electrical communication with each of the sockets. A jack detection arrangement is adapted to automatically determine whether a plug is inserted into a respective one of the sockets based on a change in electrical characteristics. For example, the jack detection arrangement may include a photonic emitter and a photonic detector situated such that a beam path therebetween is interrupted by insertion of a plug. The case may further have a rotary selector knob for selecting a multimeter function.

  • Patent number: 7645156
Abstract: A connector includes first and second plug-and-socket connector parts and a connection element. The first connector part has a latch operable to connect the connector parts together. The connection element is connected and is displaceable with respect to the first connector part between first and second positions. The connection element has a pair of locking tabs operable with the latch such that the connection element is fixed in the first position until the latch connects the connector parts together and such that the connection element is movable from the first position to the second position when the latch connects the connector parts together. While in the first position the locking tabs release the latch connection such that the connector parts are separable from one another. While in the second position the locking tabs secure the latch connection such that the connector parts are securable connected to one another.

  • Patent number: 7642465
Abstract: An elbow terminator has a socket in which an electrical probe is disposed. The terminator is insertable onto an electrical bushing such that a tongue of the bushing is received in the socket of the terminator, and the probe of the terminator is electrically coupled to a contact sleeve disposed within the tongue. A latching mechanism produces positive latching between the tongue and socket when the tongue has been inserted to a predescribed depth within the socket. In order to enable an operator to visually observe that the tongue has been inserted to the prescribed depth, the bushing carries a color band which becomes completely disposed (invisible) in the socket when positive latching occurs. Alternatively, the bushing can be provided with gauge tabs which become aligned with a witness line formed on the terminator when positive latching occurs.

A connection detector (30) is mounted on the female housing (10) for movement along the connecting direction (CD) between standby and detection positions. The connection detector (30) does not contact receiving portions (48) of the male housing (40) when the connection detector (30) is at the standby position. However, pressing portions (32) of the connection detector (30) press the receiving portions (48) when the connection detector (CD) is at the detection position to prevent relative movements of the connection detector (30) and the male connector housing (40). Abstract: Separable connector assemblies include one or more pairs of connectors that engage and disengage one another in electrical connection and disconnection operations, respectively. An operator can disengage the connectors by pushing the connectors together and then pulling the connectors apart. Pushing the connectors together shears interface adhesion between the connectors, making it easier for the operator to pull the connectors apart. An indicator integral or coupled to one of the connectors can indicate whether the first and second connectors are in the pushed-in-position. A window in the other connector includes an opening, channel, and/or translucent or semi-translucent material through which the indicator may be seen. Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for monitoring and reporting cable connectivity such as patch panel port-level connectivity on a real-time basis. For patch panel systems, the approach is based upon a distributed architecture that may be modularly scalable and may reduce, if not eliminate, the need for a centralized signal processor and complex cabling between patch panels and the centralized signal processor. Each patch panel may determine port level connectivity independently. Polling delays and polling-related overhead processing may be reduced or eliminated by supporting real-time monitoring of port connectivity at the port level. The approach provides improved real-time reporting of patch panel connectivity with reduced cabling complexity, increased reliability, and decreased maintenance costs. In addition, the approach is compatible with (i.e., may communicate with and be controlled by) a multipurpose network management system (NMS). In addition, a compatible revision system is provided.

  • Patent number: 7517243

Abstract: A circuit board connector housing (10) includes slide contacts (19) arranged before contact areas (16) of detecting terminals (15A) with respect to a connecting direction. The slide contacts (19) contact touching portions (30) of shorting terminals (27) during a connecting operation of two housings (10, 20). The slide contacts (19) remove foreign matter from the touching portions (30) during the connecting operation of the two housings (10, 20). Thus, extra efforts to remove foreign matter are not needed before the housings (10, 20) are connected. The absence of foreign matter on the touching portions (30) achieves good quality contact with the contact areas (16) of the detecting terminals (15A) and assures reliability of a connection detecting function.

Abstract: A mechanical device that indicates prior mating. The device comprises a first part having a first conductive device movable from a first position to a second position and a plurality of second conductive devices, and a second mating part including a plurality of third conductive devices mateable to the plurality of second conductive devices. On initial mating of the first and second part, the second part causes the movable first conductive device to move from the first position to a second position where it is captured, while closing a circuit that causes a signal to be sent. Further mating of the first and second parts connects the plurality of second conductive devices to the plurality of third conductive devices. In subsequent unmating and remating of the first and second parts, the first conductive device, being captured in its second position, does not result in a circuit closing before the plurality of second conductive devices mate with the third conductive devices.
