  • Patent number: 6935879
Abstract: The present invention provides connectors having circuit protection. Specifically, the present invention provides a device that operates with existing or new connectors to provide overvoltage protection to same. The device includes a strip of conductive material along which voltage variable material (“VVM”) is applied. The strip also includes an exposed portion not having the VVM deposition. The VVM contacts a plurality of signal conductors of the connector. The exposed portion contacts at least one ground conductor of the connector. When an overvoltage condition occurs along one of the signal conductors, the VVM switches from a high impedance to a low impedance state, allowing the transient threat to dissipate, at least in part, to one or more ground conductor.

  • Patent number: 6835079
Abstract: An electrical connector assembly has a shorting member which is capable of electrically connecting or “shorting” certain contacts within a first connector when disconnected from a second connector to avoid an open circuit condition. The shorting member may be configured to short three or more contacts at the same time, and to be disengaged automatically upon connection of the first and second connectors. Moreover, the shorting member may be formed of a single piece of material and have an opposed pair of arms for engaging each contact.

  • Patent number: 6512664
Abstract: An electrical connector is disclosed. The electrical connector includes a housing made of a near insulative material. The near insulative material has a resistance to current flow in the presence of low voltage current and has a surface resistivity which allows sufficient current flow to dissipate static electrical charges. The housing has a surface resistivity level within the range of 104 to 1010 ohms per square, and preferably within the range of 105 to 108 ohms per square. The material used for the housing has negligible current flow in the presence of low voltage current such as when the conductor is conducting signals or electricity during normal operations. The current flow is in an amount sufficient to dissipate a static charge on the housing to a level where placing the jumper onto a set of pins will not produce a failure in a microchip electrically coupled to the jumper.

Abstract: A shorting contact support for a plug-in projection (5c) in an igniter receptacle, comprising a first shorting bridge (30a) having two resilient contact elements (35a, 36a) connected to one another by an edge (37) of a metal plate (31), and a support housing (9) having an annular base (2) on which two diametrically opposite wings (3, 4) are integrally formed parallel to the insertion direction and form a holder (5) for a plug (6) having sockets (51, 52) for the insertion of contact pins (21, 22) on an igniter receptacle (20). The shorting contact support has a second shorting bridge (30b) which is essentially identical to the first shorting bridge (30a), each wing (3, 4) containing a shorting bridge (30a, 30b), so that at least one bridge (30a, 30b) shorts the two contact pins (21, 22) arranged in one plane on the igniter receptacle (20) when the plug (6) is inserted. In addition, the holder (5) is rotationally symmetrical through 180°.
