Abstract: A soft internal touch contact (1) for a Land Grid Array (LGA) socket (4) for interconnecting an LGA package (5) with a printed circuit board (PCB) (6) comprises first and second spring arms (13, 14) on opposite ends thereof, and a solder portion (16) between the first and second spring arms for being soldered to the PCB. The first and second spring arms have first and second free end sections (134, 144) respectively defining a downwardly and an upwardly facing inclined surfaces (136, 146) for engaging with each other thereby establishing a shortened electrical path between the LGA package and the PCB. Upon downward deflection of the first spring arm by the LGA package to engage with the second spring arm, the second spring arm correspondingly yields downward whereby a wiping action is generated between the downwardly and upwardly facing inclined surfaces along a direction substantially tangential to the inclined surfaces and also between the first spring arm and a contact pad (50) of the LGA package.

  • Patent number: 6227869
Abstract: An LGA socket comprises an insulative housing defining a number of passageways therethrough and a corresponding number of terminals retained therein. Each terminal forms upper and lower spring arms partially extending beyond the corresponding passageway, a curved linking portion for connecting the upper and lower arms, and a securing arm extending from the lower arm towards the upper arm and secured to the insulative housing. The upper arm can be deformed to contact the securing arm thereby providing a short electrical path therethrough and reducing the overall height of the LGA socket.

Abstract: A high speed connector (10) includes an insulative housing (12) defining a central slot (14) with two rows of passageways (16) by two sides thereof wherein each passageway (16) receives a contact (18) therein. Each contact (18) includes a base (20) with retention means (24) for interferentially engaging the contact (18) within the corresponding passageway (16). From the base (20), a main arm (26) extends upwardly toward and into the central slot (14), and an auxiliary arm (28) extends upward spaced from the main arm (26) and also spaced from the outer wall (30 in the passageway (16). When the module (100) is inserted into the central slot (14), the module (100) first engages the main arm (26) and pushes the main arm (26) outwardly. The main arm (26) successively engages the corresponding auxiliary arm (28) aside and pushes the auxiliary arm (28) outwardly.

  • Patent number: 6033233
Abstract: An electrical connecting device and related method of testing a semiconductor device which provides for testing of a semiconductor device under excellent and stable current transfer characteristics. Moreover, the electrical connecting device is easily produced under mass production conditions and can be made with a structure for testing of a semiconductor device where there are many pins arranged in a fine pitch on the semiconductor device. The electrical connector device includes a contactor which has a coil-shaped spring and a transformable conductive member extending in the compressing direction of the coil-shaped spring. When one end of the conductive member is in contact with a first electrode and the other end of the conductive members in contact with the second electrode, the contactor electrically connects between the first electrode and the second electrode via the conductive member and generates contact pressure against the electrodes when the coil-shaped spring is pressed.

  • Patent number: 6019611
Abstract: An LGA type IC assembly is mounted on a PCB by means of a fastening means which sandwiches the LGA assembly and the PCB between two plates. Conductive contacts received in passageways defined through a socket of the assembly each have two engagement portions projecting beyond the outer surfaces of the socket to contact corresponding flat contact pads formed on an IC package and the PCB, a beveled edge on an upper portion of a main body thereof, and a C-shaped resilient beam extending from the main body and forming a slanted portion integrally formed with the upper engagement portion. The IC package delivers a normal force to each contact causing the upper engagement portion thereof to slide across a surface of a corresponding contact pad of the IC package thereby removing oxidation therefrom, while the slanted portion contacts the beveled edge thereby shortening the signal transmission path through each contact.

  • Patent number: 5913700
Abstract: An electrical connector for interconnecting a circuit card to a substrate includes a dielectric housing having an elongated slot which is open for receiving an edge portion of the circuit card, and a plurality of contacts which are spaced-apart along a length of the slot. Each of the contacts has a base portion, a lead extending from the housing for connection with a circuit path on the substrate, and a contact arm having a contact surface which extends into the slot for engaging a respective contact pad on the circuit card. An electrical path through each contact is defined from the contact surface to the lead, the electrical path being relatively long when the contact is undeflected. The contact arm has a free end which engages the base portion of the contact during insertion of the circuit card into the slot, wherein a relatively shorter electrical path through the contact is defined from the contact surface to the lead.
